Chumpe
Also known as: Jatunriti / Ñanaloma / Yanaloma
Chumpe, also known as Jatunriti, is a 6,106-meter (20,033 feet) peak in Peru’s Vilcanota Range, part of the breathtaking Andes. Located close to the iconic Ausangate massif, Chumpe offers a unique, quieter alternative for climbers seeking high-altitude mountaineering experiences in Peru. The mountain's stunning glaciated slopes, rugged ridges, and beautiful ice formations create a challenging and rewarding ascent that requires both technical skill and endurance.
The route to Chumpe’s summit usually begins from the small Andean village of Pacchanta, which serves as a gateway for many expeditions in the region. The climb involves steep sections and mixed snow and ice terrain, making it suitable for climbers with experience in glacier travel and a good grasp of alpine techniques. Views from the summit include sweeping panoramas of the Vilcanota Range and glimpses of nearby giants like Ausangate.
This remote peak offers a true expedition feel, with fewer crowds than other Andean peaks. However, high-altitude conditions and the isolation require careful planning, solid acclimatization, and preparation for variable weather. Chumpe is a rewarding choice for mountaineers drawn to the quiet grandeur of the Andes and looking for a less-trodden path in one of Peru’s wildest landscapes.
