Iliniza South is a rugged, technical climb in Ecuador's Andes, known for its steep snow and ice routes that require solid alpine skills, particularly with crampons and ice axes. It stands at 5,248 meters, making it one of Ecuador's higher peaks, but what makes it challenging is the changing conditions—it can be icy, with crevasses and exposed sections, especially near the summit. Climbers often use the Iliniza Refugio, located at 4,700 meters, as a base for acclimatization and an early morning start.
