Epic experience climbing Chimborazo with Andean Summit Adventure! Jaime is one of the best guides I’ve ever had and Elisabeth made the process absolutely seamless despite me calling to book the climb only 5 days before. Thank you for answering my numerous questions, giving acclimatization tips, and making sure everything went smoothly.

Due to my tight schedule I urgently contacted this company for Cayambe climb. However, Elisabeth said all their excellent guides were already booked so they couldn't provide a guide at that time. Instead, I booked Chimborazo climb with this company for another day. Foolishly, I went to Cayambe first with another guide from a different company and had a terrible experience. After that I understood why Andean Summit Adventure insists on providing only the best guides even if it means losing immediate profit. The company's high ratings prove this. My experience climbing Chimborazo with guide Jaime was one of the most valuable lessons in my life. He is not only an excellent mountain guide but also a good person. Every moment with him was enjoyable. In the middle of the climb I felt a little exhausted and the cold strong winds made me afraid to continue. After talking to Jaime, we decided to give up. We took a few steps down and at that moment Jaime said "Let's try again for the summit". His words gave me the determination so we turned around and reached the summit together in a few hours. Later, I asked him why. He said he saw strength in my steps. Jaime is the person who encouraged me to overcome my limits when I was easily ready to quit. After the climb I told him he had changed my life. Don't choose just any guide for a small difference in cost. It can determine whether you reach the summit or not. The experience of climbing Ecuador's highest peaks can bring great insights and a sense of accomplishment. Even choosing a tour company can be a significant decision in your life. Many thanks to Elisabeth for handling communication, Katty for managing equipment rental and to our wonderful guide Jaime!

We would like to take a moment and give our Gratitude to Andean Summit Adventure. It’s taken a week to write this review because I wanted to find the best words that I could to write a 5 star review. Paulina and I had been in touch with Elisabeth for over a year prior to our trip. She was very attentive and knowledgeable. She answered the million question we had for her as well. Elisabeth put us both at ease that we had chosen the best guiding service to take us to the summit of Chimborazo. At Andean Summit Adventure, they make you feel not like clients but family and people that you can call friends. We did the 8 day trip, this included climbing Ruco Pacincha 4,696m, Iliniza Norte 5,127m, Cotopaxi 5,897m and last but not least Chimborazo 6,270m. With Andean Summit Adventure safety and the well being of the people comes first before anything. This was an incredible touch that really made us feel that they cared and had our best interests in mind. After planning and training to climb Chimborazo for two years Andean Summit Adventure made this happen. With Elisabeth’s knowledge of all the mountains and great organizations she matched us up with Jaime our Guide. He is a top grade guide with lots of experience to help you succeed. I would not hesitate for a second to use them again to climb in Ecuador or other countries for that matter. Much regards, Project Chimborazo: The Climb to Inspire Kevin Mallia

My husband and I booked with Andean Summit and Adventure to climb 4 mountains in Ecuador's highlands....best decision ever!!! Right from the beginning, I knew both Elizabeth and Jaime were personalble and super caring. We summitted successfully Rucu Pichincha and Iliniza Norte. We reached about 100m to the glacier of Cotopaxi and had to turn around due to unsafe weather conditions. I had suffered altitude sickness and wasn't able to summit Chimborazo, but all throughout the 8 day accilmitization process, Jaime always had a plan for me so I could see the other summits throughout successfully. We could not ask for a better guide and mountaineering tour company. 5 stars all the wayyyyy👏🏽💯🤗 You guys rock❤️ Paulina Jimenez

Elisabeth, always extremely helpful, beyond any immagination. A professional "angel". We did seven summits with them with 100% success rate (Ruminahui Central, Corazon, Illiniza Norte, Illiniza Sur, Antisana, Cayambe, Chimborazo)! I definitely feel like I must give them my highest recommendation. Jaime Vargas, UIAGM international guide, took us on several interesting and challenging routes, which made the experience unforgettable. A great professional and became immediately a true friend. It has been simply fabulous climbing, Jaime being always able to motivate and encourage, keeping myself in comfort zone, with professionalism and reliability. Are you thinking at living an adventure in Ecuador? Choose Andean Summit Adventure! It will be the best decision you can make. Their business? Make dreams come true and fill your heart and mind with super, superb, positive feelings and unforgettable memories!

We had a great experience with Andean Summit Adventure. Organization and logistics were very good, all questions and requests answered and addressed immediately. We had a great time with our guide Diego who was super friendly and at the same time very experienced and professional. We felt better than at home. We’ve climbed Cayambe however not Chimborazo but this was related to dangerous snow conditions and had nothing to do with guiding. If you consider Andean Summit Adventure services I can only recommend it. And by the way - Ecuador and it’s volcanoes are fantastic place to visit and climb.

Just finished a great climb up Illinizas Norte and Chimborazo arranged by Andean Summit Adventures (ASA), and it was wonderful (we were fortunate that the mountain spirits allowed us to summit both). Andean Summit is a very professional company, and my guide - Jaime Vargas - is a great fellow, and very experienced in these mountains. And believe me, you need this for these climbs, particularly Chimborazo. With his safety focus, Jaime is just the sort of fellow you want to be attached to going up Chimborazo!! Chimborazo is Beauty and the Beast -- it is spectacular, both from a distance, and from on its slopes. But it is also a beast, in the challenges and perils it presents to we humans. There is a real risk of injury or death on this mountain. Thus, it is essential to have an guide experienced on this mountain. Andean Summit has the right stuff. Happy climbing.

I climbed Tungurahua together with Jaime in November as a preparation for successful attempts to climb both Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. The trip was perfectly organized by Elisabeth and Jaime did a great job as a guide. My girlfriend just went to the refuge and did not go for the summit, but she had a great time anyway. I would absolutely recommend Andean Summit Adventure and I hope that I can do some further tours in Ecuador in the future with them!

You guys are the best and the level of professionalism you bring to the climbing world is un-matched!! Andean Summit Adventure is a very good (One of the best) for climbing in South America. Safety is a top priority while pushing for the summit. Jaime helped me get to the summit of both Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. What a great experience!!!!!!!!!

I had the pleasure during the last two weeks of climbing some mountains with Andean Summit Adventures. This was a great experience. The planning & communication up front with Elisabeth was perfect. The response time was very quick and she was always trying to fulfill my needs & wishes. The climbing with Jaime was fantastic. He has excellent knowledge and vast experience in the mountains. He always made sure I was well and whenever possible that we reach the summit. Out of 7 summits I made 6 (Antisana unfortunately not because of a heavy snow storm). We also did not so well known mountains like Sincholagua, a very beautiful & interesting mountain with some climbing in the end. During the ascent we had very heavy storms, but we continued. And finally we got to the summit with no wind. A great experience! And thanks to Jaime I could also climb Cotopaxi as he changed the schedule because of the weather conditions. He heard that all the nights before nobody reached the summit and everybody turned around. So we decided short-term to do a daylight ascent (which under some circumstances you can do) to have at least a chance with the actual weather conditions. And we reached the summit! This kind of analysis & flexibility is also the strength of Andean Summit Adventures. And then of course we also climbed the Chimborazo!

I would highly recommend Andean Summit Adventures to anyone considering summiting the high peaks of Ecuador. I used their services 4 separate times to climb Cayambe, Cotopaxi (twice), and Chimborazo while living in Ecuador for three months in 2019/2020. I successfully summited all 4 attempts, thanks in part to the amazing guides Andean Summit Adventures works with. I used 4 guides with the company (Paul, Manuel, Fabian and Diego), all were incredibly capable guides who not only know the mountains but who also are fun to talk with and learn from. Each guide was also great at making each mountain a personalized approach to ensure that the pace and style fit what I needed to make it to the top. Also, while not necessarily part of the guiding services, I had a lot of fun talking with my driver for three of the climbs (Rigoberto) and learning about the history, culture, and flora/fauna of Ecuador. I would recommend him if you need a driver in country. Last, Elisabeth really does pull everything together in the best way possible, as others have mentioned. She answered all my questions promptly, helped me with gear rental and training suggestions, and even helped with rescheduling a climb after I got unexpectedly sick the night before. She was organized, helpful, and in communication throughout the whole process. I did a lot of research on guiding options in Ecuador, and based on my experience am confident that Andean Summit Adventures is one of the best.

In January 2019 we went summit hunting in Ecuador for around 2 weeks with Andean Summit Adventure. Pasochoa, Rucu Pichincha, Ilinizia Norte and Sur, Cotopaxi and Chimborazo were our destinations. The entire tour was perfectly planned from A to Z and tailored to us with a good mix of mountaineering and rest days, which were necessary for such a program. The care left nothing to be desired. You could contact the organizer with any questions or requests and you would always receive an open ear and they would always ask if everything was okay. We were also able to make a small change to the program and add Ilinizia Sur to the program at our own request, as well as adding a few days at the end of the trip to enjoy Ecuador a little more. The mountain tours to the various peaks were led perfectly, conscientiously and safely by the mountain guides, initially Fabian and then Jaime (the boss himself). This is also why we were able to successfully climb all the peaks. I and my partner can therefore only recommend this organizer. Many thanks again to Elisabeth and Jaime for the unforgettable adventure!!

I hired Andean Summit Adventure to attempt the ascent of Chimborazo. From email communication with Elizabeth to reaching the summit with Jaime, everything went perfectly. They respond very quickly, they look for solutions, they are very flexible with the dates, they even helped me with the high mountain equipment because I had nothing to climb. It is a very professional agency. I recommend them without a doubt.

Amazing time in Ecuador summiting Cayambe & Chimborazo! The acclimatization part of the trip climbing other mountains such as Pasochoa, Rumiñahui and Cotopaxi glacier worked great and made the whole program very interesting. Jamie is a very skilled mountain guide and pleasant person to hang out with. Communication in English was always easy with both Jamie and Elisabeth. I highly recommend Andean Summit Adventure to anyone looking to climb the Ecuadorian volcanoes in good hands.

We had the perfect trip and experience with Andean Summit Adventures. We climbed on Iliniza Norte, Cayambe and Chimborazo with Jaime - the best guide in Ecuador. Jaime made the car rides fun, the meals interesting and the climbs safe and extremely enjoyable. It really stood out that he was extremely respected amongst the other guides and a real authority in the mountains. The organization team around Eilsabeth were at our help at all times (including advice for equipment and acclimatization planning which was particularly important for us as beginners). This made our Ecuadorian climbing experience as smooth as possible. The strongest recommendation for Andean Summit Adventures for your climbing experiences in Ecuador from Germany!

Our objective was to have fun, acclimate gradually and climb at least one major volcano in Ecuador over a two week period. Andean Summit Adventures was exceptional in all facets of our trip, communicating frequently, responding promptly and maintaining contact throughout. Elizabeth is both highly organized and personally experienced. Our guide, Jaime, was our constant companion, mentor, teacher and leader as we progressed through a series of higher and more challenging hikes and summit scrambles. This culminated in a beautiful, blue bird, alpine ascent of Cotopaxi, which was an unforgettable experience. Recent, significant snow presented an avalanche danger on Chimborazo so we only went up to high camp (17,700’). We met almost every type of weather imaginable in a stunning trip through a beautiful country. Muchas gracias para todos, Jaime and Elizabeth!

He helped me learn new climbing techniques while keeping me safe. He is a professional among professionals. It is also comforting that every where we went people know him and would ask him all types of questions. Obviously others value his expertise too! Jaime and Elisabeth made an excellent team coordinating and guiding my climbs up to Pasachoa, Iliniza Norte, Cotopaxi, and Chimborazo. Thanks to Jaime's guidance and climbing pace, I was able to summit all four peaks without feeling winded or succumb to altitude. Elisabeth goes the extra mile, promptly answering all questions and consistently stays in touch to make sure clients are safe and satisfied with their services. There are many qualified guides in Ecuador, but Andean Summit Adventures is without a doubt the best option to take when climbing in the Andes. After searching the internet and reading reviews, I'm pretty sure you'll come to the same conclusion. The mountains themselves were stunningly beautiful and easily worth the trip from Oregon to Ecuador, but proper acclimatization, especially for Cotopaxi and Chimborazo, is a must. Out of three rope teams, my guide and I were the only ones to summit Chimborazo, and I suspect the reason was due to inadequate acclimatization.

I can't say enough about Andean Summit Adventures. Elisabeth was terrific setting everything up, dealing with our changes in plans and people, and advising us throughout on an itinerary that made sense. The guides Jaime, Manuel, Israel, and William were highly capable, appropriately cautious about conditions, and great fun to spend time with. We climbed Iliniza Norte, Cotopaxi, and Chimborazo. All the arrangements went like clockwork, from our first pick-up in Quito to the lodges, refuges, and climbs, till the final drop-off after Chimborazo. I highly recommend Andean Summit Adventures to anyone looking for a first-class experience in Ecuador and beyond.

Andean Summit Adventure arranged for me to climb Chimborazo in December of 2017. Elizabeth (who is Austrian) provided well informed advice (in fluent english) about the requisite gear and acclimatization, and made all of the arrangements. My one-on-one guide was Manuel, who was strong, encouraging, and very pleasant to be with. Our summit attempt was aborted at 4 am at an elevation of 5800 meters due to avalanche potential. Notwithstanding, I was thrilled to learn that I was capable of completing this climb - and am looking forward to coming back and doing so - with Andean Summit Adventure, of course.

Since I started planning my trip to Ecuador, an alpine climb had always been in my mind. If I was going to do it I might as well go for the big one in Chimborazo! The trouble was I hadn't done anything like this before and I didn't have much of the gear either. I emailed Andean Summit Adventures on the back of some of the reviews here and I wasn't disappointed. Elisabeth replied promptly to all my emails and answered all my questions and doubts very professionally. They were able to supply anything I was missing for a small extra cost and I was reassured by their professionalism. Jaime led us on the ascent and Paul was great as my guide. The climb was one of the toughest physical things I have ever done but it was absolutely worth it to stand on the top of the world (we made it!). Elisabeth and Jaime were available to help or answer any questions at every step. I felt in very safe hands. They are also lovely people and were great to chat to. If I am back in this part of the world again I would definitely take on another summit with them.

Climbed Cayambe and Chimborazo with Jaime in February, 2017. Everything that he provided was superb - excellent knowledge about the mountians and snow conditions and about ecuador in general. Climbed Chimborazo and Cayambe with Jaime and Patricio in February. Very professional climbing guides (both have done Aconcagua many times over). Everything was organized on the highest level, food, transport, lodging. Mountain huts are in superb conditions. Endless Andes with beautiful mountain peaks. Quito is gorgeous, you will start acclimatizing on the street of town. Ecuador has a lot to show for . You will get the jungles the mountain and almost a thousand miles of a shore line. And of course the Galapagos. Everything is in the palm of your hand. Currently negotiating my second trip to Ecuador for acclimatization purposes for Aconcagua climb with Jaime.
Ian Taylor Trekking

I've been sitting on this review for the past week, as I've been processing some post-trip depression. The reason for this depression is due to the quality of connection and experiences had with Ian Taylor & struggles readjusting back to "normal life" My first trek with Ian was with my dad & brother on Kilimanjaro, last summer. I had a similar feeling following that trek, which is why my dad and I decided to book another trip this year (Cayambe/Chimborazo). Every detail of this trek was executed with meticulous detail, so much so that it was hard figuring out how they do this with such consistency. The secret (or my best guess)? Their team has 20+ years of experience, and are constantly iterating to one up themselves. This expertise is not only in logistics, but also in mountaineering. I've been climbing mountains in Colorado for years, and Ian has taken my love for mountaineering to new heights (pun intended). After seeing the level of safety and attention to detail put into the technical aspects of these climbs, I am not going to do any other big treks with anyone else (looking at you, Aconcagua...) Thank you, Ian & Laura for living with intentionality and for putting in the work to give me experiences that I will never forget.

This was my 3rd trip with Ian Taylor Trekking and each time they set even higher standards! Ian and Laura were super helpful in answering questions before the trip. Our itinerary in Ecuador was perfect; we got to see quite some of the sights including Quito and 'Middle of World' on the equator. Most importantly it acclimatised us to the altitude with climbs to 4200m and 4600m before the big stuff of Cayambe (5800m) and Chimborazo (6300m). The final climbs were harder than I ever imagined but we made it and it was so worthwhile. Our guide Joaquin was fantastic; so passionate about his country and the mountains and keeping us safe. The hotels and food were outstanding and all in all a fantastic experience. I highly recommend Ian Taylor trekking and their Cotopaxi (or Cayambe) and Chimborazo trip.

Professional, fast, reliable, customer oriented, honest, transparent! Julio Verne Travel accompanied me perfectly in the preparation of the climb. However, thanks to theyr professional and transparent communication, we came to the conclusion that it would not make sense to even go to the High Camp of Chimborazo (to much snow). Others did and attempted a climb which led to the tragic and unnecessary death of several people in an avalanche! Planning to climb Chimborazo? Do it with the best: Julio Verne Travel!

Julio Verne Travel was recommended to us by Chimborazo Lodge Marco Cruz to rent some equipment for climbing Chimborazo. We borrowed shoes, rain pants, sleeping bags, hiking poles and gaiters. After recommending this agency in Quito, we contacted them to climb Chimborazo. The truth is that at all times they treated us very well, both in the communication, which was very good, and during the entire time of the ascension. The material is top quality for that type of mountain and the extras such as food and others are also very good. Our guide was Cristian and it was obvious that he had experience and knew this mountain very well, 100% professional. Although we did not manage to reach the top due in part to bad weather, it was a huge experience that we would do again. As a recommendation it would be that to reach the summit more easily you should sleep in high country and from there go to the summit. In our case it was not like that and I think it would have been better. Thanks for everything!

Julio Verne Travel went above and beyond during my trip to Ecuador. I work in the adventure travel business in Alaska and know what it takes to run a smooth trip and go out of the way for clients. First, we booked very last minute after deciding to do this with a guide rather than unguided. They accommodated. Next, my climbing partner and I had a car issue and were stranded on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere before meeting. We sent a message and our company driver came to help and got us to the park entrance in time. They also assisted in getting us a ride back to our car on the way back. Finally, our guide, Christian was great. He was an accomplished climber and helped us to the top of Chimborazo. We got up and down, he increased our chance of a summit with recent route beta, route familiarity, and professionalism. Our stay at high camp Alto was also great and I recommend staying there to increase your chance of a summit. As an outdoor professional myself with 6 years of industry experience, I highly recommend Julio Verne Travel if you are planning a summit of one of Ecuador’s peaks.

I planned to hike Chimborazo, and after dealing with a minor issue with an alternate operator, Julio Verne couldn’t have been more helpful. I wanted to spend a day or two at altitude first to see how my body reacted before committing to a summit attempt, and this was fine by the kind owner, Popkje. All of the equipment was of very good quality, and included in the package. Popkje also assisted with booking refugios on the mountain. It appears as though most (if not all) of the agencies utilise a pool of qualified mountain guides. Whilst my guide wasn’t particularly the most talkative (either in English or my attempts at Spanish) that wasn’t his job. He carried out his job as a guide superbly and I felt very safe. We made it to 6,000m, however, given the avalanche risk, we were unable to summit. A snow storm had blown through two days prior, and even with my limited avalanche awareness training, we were both in agreement and I knew we couldn’t go further. Reaching 6,000m was an achievement for me, and there was no lasting disappointment that the summit couldn’t be conquered - safety is paramount, especially in these mountain conditions. You can always climb another day. It was tough - I’m reasonably fit and used to spending time in the Canadian Rockies, but the altitude does take its toll. Would recommend Julio Verne to anyone wanting to explore La Sierra, Ecuador.

I recently completed a six day fully customized tour with my wife in July, 2024. We expanded upon the Volcano Avenue tour and added two days of mountain biking to four days of hiking. I will start by stating that we usually do not travel and engage in tours feeling that we would rather be alone and figure out the logistics/plans on our own. However after researching Equador and the Central Highlands area I had the feeling that logistics would be extremely difficult to perfect. You can get around by bus or by private rides but getting to trail heads and getting rides after completing hiking trails in remote areas seemed nearly impossible. We also wanted to stay in haciendas and hotels nightly so we needed to get rides every evening. Also the hiking trails are not marked and there are basically no signs anywhere. These are remote areas and getting hurt would be re a really difficult situation. So I worked with Popjke the owner and basically customized my own tour which included very minimal daily driving and hotel stays, basically glamping. Our typical day was: Getting picked up at our hotel at 8:30, driven to our hiking/climbing/biking destination with a private guide, and driven to our hotel in the afternoon. We stayed at a different area/hotel every night of the tour. Then on our last day of the tour we were driven to Banos and 3 days later driven from Banos back to Quito. Full service. So my review is….amazing. The activities had great variety and were what we wanted, the hotels were all different but great. Food was amazing, they provided box lunches (specifically for my wife that has a lot of food allergies) and breakfast/dinner was great. Out private guide Marcial was perfect and spoke fluent English. The drivers Moises and Roberto always had the right car for the occasion. The staff really love Equador and it shows. The company has a great vibe and treated us like family and really spoiled us. Also we had to change two activities last minute because of natural disaster and were able to find quality alternatives. We were in Quito, Pasochoa, Cotopaxi, Ruminahui, Chimborazo, Riobamba, and Banos in our 12 days in Equador. So basically I’m saying that Julio Verne Travel is first rate and they will take great care of you and try and give you exactly the trip that you planned. They exceeded my expectations and provide us a five star experience.

I could not recommend this company highly enough - Julio Verne made my trip in Ecuador magical! Initially I reached out to Julio Verne to enquire about a hiking trip to Chimborazo. Popkje was so knowledgable and ended up planning my entire trip - to the Galapagos and to Chimborazo (with some acclimatisation hikes to support) 16 days in total. My trip to the Galapagos was absolutely perfect and planned so well, giving me 8 days to experience everything including diving, snorkelling and hiking which I explained to Popkje I really wanted to do - I could not find anywhere else with this itinerary for the very competitive price they provided. I was picked up on time for every excursion and all the accommodation was clean, modern with excellent breakfasts included - and the Galápagos Islands speak for themselves they were incredible. Once back to mainland Ecuador it was time to climb Chimborazo! Popkje was very honest that I needed to ensure I had acclimatised enough to give me the best opportunity to reach the summit of Chimborazo (the closest place on earth to the sun @ 6263m!!). I had 5 acclimatisation hikes with Marcial and Fabian, both excellent mountain guides who are friendly, motivational and knowledgeable of Ecuadors mountains, flora and fauna! The equipment provided by Julio Verne is all very high quality to ensure you are summiting Chimborazo in the safest way possible, and Fabian (my mountain guide) took our safety very seriously too. Making it to the top of Chimborazo was the best feeling in the world and I cannot thank all those at Julio Verne, I know I owe it to them for my success in reaching the summit! A final thank you to Popkje who went above and beyond to support me throughout my trip, organising additional transfers to the airport as well as booking my accommodation for my last night in Ecuador - she is a truly wonderful person and so trustworthy. I do hope anyone considering booking with Julio Verne goes ahead and books because I just had the trip of a lifetime and that was all because of this fantastic company!

Excellent operation for trips to the region. They offer a set of fixed itineraries, but will customize trips to meet your needs. Pre-trip communication was unmatched - fast, accurate responses to my questions. I used them to organize some acclimatization hikes (a 3 day trek to El Altar, and some hikes at the base of Chimborazo) in preparation for a climb of Chimborazo. They worked to match me with other clients to help reduce my expenses. All the logistics were handled perfectly. The guides were top notch. I had most of the needed equipment myself, but everything provided to me and all the gear others were provided with was in great condition. They also organized airport transport for me. All of my needs were met.

I was very pleased with the entire Julio Verne team for organizing an amazing volcano climbing experience for me. Mine was a 6-day trip that included 3 peaks (Rumiñahui, Iliniza Norte and finally Chimborazo). My guide, Fabian, was terrific, he grew up climbing mountains in Ecuador and has probably done all of the summits hundreds of times. I always felt safe with him, even though we had some pretty rough conditions, especially at the Ilinizas. But also beyond the climbing, the whole trip (including accommodation, meals and transfers) was very well organized. The Chimborazo Lodge is simply beautiful, could not have imagined a better place to rest prior to the final summit attempt. And I cannot thank the team enough for the flexibility re changing mountains last minute (I was supposed to climb Carihuairazo instead of Chimborazo, and changed plans a few days before the planned climb, once my trip already started, which the team accommodated promptly) - this way I was able to celebrate my birthday on top of Chimborazo, which will definitely be hard to forget. A huge thank you for the entire trip, I had an incredible time! Definitely recommended

I want to preface this review by saying I booked this climb 5 weeks before the date, which gave me little time for physical preparation. I needed help. J Verne was amazing to work with. We scheduled an initial call three weeks before the summit attempt to review all logistics. My point of contact, Popkje, convinced me to push the hike out a week so I could better acclimate to altitude and set up living arrangements. When I made it to Ecuador, we were in constant contact. I didn't have to worry about a thing! On summit day, I was fortunate with a great weather window and a better guide. He was experienced (30+ years) and pushed me even if it meant tough love. I still don't believe I would have reached the top without his maniacal obsession with proper technique, timing and concentration. Taking on Chimborazo is formidable and daunting. I was incredibly fortunate for his guidance.

Professional, fast, reliable, honest, transparent!

I’d like to recommend Julio Verne Travel for hiking trips to various locations in Ecuador. Two friends and I recently climbed Chimborazo with our guide, Dimitri. What was wonderful about our adventure was that Dimitri tailored our hikes to our specific experience level, the day’s weather and the conditions of the terrain. When we weren’t hiking, Dimitri took us on a walking tour of Riobamba where we stayed and to various places of interest as we drove to our destinations. Our accommodations for this trip were at Rincon Aleman, where we had clean and spacious rooms, breakfast every morning and use of a community kitchen. Food was also available at local restaurants or by delivery. The staff was very accommodating. Van pickup was part of our package. Dimitri picked us up at our front doors and dropped each of us home. I’m looking forward to my next Julio Verne adventure.

Our experience with Julio Verne has been incredible. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who go to Ríobamba in Ecuator for any type of tour! Probably the most serious agency in all Ecuator, after using 3 different agencies between Latacunga and Ríobamba.... The equipment is great and technical, the clothes & sleeping bags are clean and well kept in the agency, the organization of the Chimborazo climbing was perfect and the guides extremely professional and caring. The bivouac @ 5300 meters helps a lot reaching the top and Julio Verne is the only agency proposing it! Talking about Popkje, the owner: she is extremely reliable, organized and attention to details, to optimize your experience! And she went way beyond her job when she took care of us and many other foreign tourists, after being trapped into the emergency state and curfews when the president doubled up the gas price! The country was nearly into a civil war and she dedicated all her time to find out solutions to evacuate all of us back to Quito with success. Definitely the best! Remy & Martine

Julio Verne Travel is not only the best travel agency we had in Ecuador, but also one of the best on all of our traveling around the world!! If you come to Riobamba and plan to do any of the awesome activities in the region (like e.g. downhill tours, Chimborazo sightseeing tours, hiking tours, tours to Guamote Market and much more) Julio Verne is the best partner to do it with. They offer not only reasonable prices but also a perfectly professional organization for any trip you want to do. What we liked the most: The owner is such a helpful and nice person who gives you always the perfect advice for any situation; she has 25 years of experience in tourism in Ecuador and can help you with any activity all over the country. From regular tours up to ‚tailor made‘ and fully customized trips through Ecuador everything is possible. And even if you’re not in Riobamba but need some service for a different region, the response is always very fast and reliable. Also if you need a driver for a direct transfer, it‘s the best agency you can go with. In three weeks we booked a couple of transfers and tours with Julio Verne and we had only fantastic guides and such nice and friendly drivers who not only gave us a perfect feeling of safety at any time, but also had interesting stories and local tips for food and specialties to tell. I heard also the tours for professional Mountaineers e.g. to climb the top of Chimborazo are outstanding, but we are no alpinists and can‘t tell about these tours ourselves. In any case, no matter what you plan to do in Ecuador (and there are lots of opportunities), we highly recommend Julio Verne, if you‘re looking for a reliable, professional and very friendly agency!! My partner and I wanted to climb a mountain in Ecuador, our hearts were set on Chimborazo but was aware of altitude risks and knew that sufficient acclimatisation was required. We got in touch with Julio Verne through their sister company EOS Ecuador, that are based in Quito. We emailed them straight away and was encouraged by their rapid response rate. When we arrived in Riobamba, we visited the store, which is very easy to find and was greeted by Popkje Van Der Ploeg, who we had been liaising with via email. She was extremely helpful and foremost, honest. She did not force a sale on us and paid particular attention to safety. She was concerned that we had not endeavoured in any acclimatisation hikes and therefore recommended some climbs that we could do solo. After this we then went back to the store and booked the Carihuairazo climb, a high climb but still considered an acclimatisation climb, in preparation for Chimborazo. I did not have particularly high expectations for the climb, it was just a stepping stone to a bigger goal. I could not have been more wrong! It was one of the most spectacular things I have done. Our guide, Sandiego, was exceptional! He spoke brilliant English, was attentive throughout the climb and at all times we felt completely safe. Carihuairazo is not a climb that should be underestimated. It is at times, very technical and requires crampons and rope work. It's an excellent introduction to technical climbing and as a virgin climber, it was an adrenaline packed experience. We were incredibly lucky with the weather and views. We walked for the first four hours through a snow storm and with the first break of light, we caught a breathtaking view of Chimborazo, the larger, neighbouring mountain. Our ascend up the summit was the highlight of our endeavour but an experience I shall never forget. I want to say a huge thank you to Julio Verne, their staff and particularly Sandiego, who without, this experience would not have been as special. I pride Julio Verne on their complete honesty of the reality, of the mountaineering world. They are not, like many booking agencies, money grabbers and pushy sales reps. They are professional, honest and put your safety at the forefront of any expedition. If you are considering climbing Chimborazo, have a look at Carihuairazo, it's as beautiful on a clear day and promises to teach you the essentials of technical climbing. Thank you Julio Verne for helping us make the right decisions and looking after us so well :) PS food, equipment, including sunglasses, crampons.... all other essential mountaineering gear, is of an exceptional standard and included in the price.

I booked a private tour to climb Chimborazo. Popkje, the owner has always been very responsive and helpful. Even months before my arrival. She also recommended places at high altitude to stay for acclimatisation. Paul was my guide and was very professional. He helped me with everything and took me up to the summit on his birthday, which will by far be my favourite day in the mountains. In general I got treated like a princess from everyone on the tour. The gear was also great and when I accidentially left a rented pant at the refugio, Popjke did quickly call them and it was no problem for them at all to go get them whenever they had to go up there for the next tour. Thank you again for this!

This was my second year in a row using JV. After avalanche conditions forced us off Chimborazo before, I returned eager to attempt a climb on Cotopaxi. A variety of hikes, treks, and bike tours around Riobamba prepared me in the week prior. JV is always on time and cooperative. I have a very good understanding and appreciation of the Ecuadorean Andes now.

We booked a Carihuairazo acclimatization climb and a Chimborazo climb through the Julio Verne agency and were very happy with our pick. Not only was the planning meticulous and the pricing moderate, also when we needed to delay the whole trip for a day and add some pieces of equipment at short notice, this was no problem and did not incur any extra charge. When one of our group suffered from altitude sickness, the agency was very supportive. The rental equipment is generally good, you may only consider bringing your own jacket and thermal layers. Highly recommended.

We did the Hidden Valley trip... bit of hiking on Chimborazo and then downhill biking for the rest of the day... all the way to Ambato. Our guide was Dmitri and the whole day was great. Great soup lunch on Chimborazo and well earnt snacks at the end of our ride. We are fit and active people but you wouldn't even need to be that fit to do this day... mostly downhill on the bikes. Most importantly the gear was great... bikes were great with good gearing and brakes. They also have spare bikes on the safety van in case of malfunction. The safety van made this trip super safe and easy plus it was mainly on quiet roads. While it wasn't a cheap day out for a budget traveller it demonstrated great value for money and was an excellent way to see Chimborazo if you have no intention on climbing the summit :-) Impressed by the tour company and their commitment to safety.

To date, we have booked 5 trips with Julio Verne - all of them a "10". I can say without reservation, that this is the most accurate, helpful and interesting agency I have come across. I have been impressed time and again with the level of service that I receive. Popkje works hard to put together outstanding experiences. In fact, she doesn't stop until every detail is nailed down perfectly. Follow up and communication are timely. She is also very thoughtful, and carefully considers our desires and abilities. At each visit, the guides and other people I observed working at the agency seemed to really enjoy what they were doing, and enjoy one another. The whole place has a great and welcoming vibe. Equipment for each trip with tip-top. A sampling of our trips to date: Hidden Valley Bicycle - really fun ride near Chimborazo. Vicunas, geology, beautiful vistas, twisty country road along river and past several rural communities. Serious fun for my family! Galapagos - a lifelong dream beautifully fulfilled. Last-minute 8day/7night cruise on m/v Majestic. Family trip of a lifetime! El Alter & Cotopaxi - A beautiful hike up to the high country to acclimate for the Cotopaxi climb. Great fun and challenging experience for two fat gringos. It must also be said that each of the guides selected for the trips were likewise outstanding. I feel that Julio Verne represents great value for money spent and also provides some truly amazing experiences. I look forward to more trips with Julio Verne down the road. Erik Knudsen

One of my favorite memories was completing the Chimborazo climb with Julio Verne. They are incredibly thorough and provide some of the best equipment I've seen. They even offered me a free ride to Estrella to Chimborazo when i inquired about what bus to take. Unfortunately, the experience was slightly dampened by a less then patient guide. However, i acknowledge that the guides are not necessarily Julio Verne, and the company itself does provide opportunities to rate your guides afterwards to ensure everything went well. This company was safe, friendly and above all else, did not skimp on the quality of service and equipment, which is crucial when you're above the clouds. If your guide happens to be impatient, just respectfully remind them that us land-dwelling-sea-urchins don't necessarily live in the same atmosphere as them and cannot be expected to function in the same manner as these mountain gazelles. Much love, Joey

We went on 2 trips with Julio Verne, both were very well organised, equipped and thrilling. The bike ride down Chimborazao was amazing, 38km from 4,800m to 3,300m. You cycle through stunning scenery down the Volcano and through small villages towards San Juan. We also went on the 2 day Vicuna trek around Chimborazao with Luis guiding us. Right from the pickup we were looked after aand wisked up the mountain. The first stage of the climb is steep and tiring but Luis only went at our pace and made us feel very relaxed at such a high altitude. They have arefuge on the side of the Volcano which could potentially sleep 20 with comfy beds and a huge sitting room. We were given a delicious Ecuadorian dinner cooked by Luis and Leonardo and listened to their stories in front of the fire. An enourmous breakfast greeted us in the morning before everything was packed onto the horse and we set off for a stunning 5 hour hike in the shadow of the massive Chimborazo. An experience we won´t forget. Thank you to all the team.

Julio Verne are an excellent company to work with and I can whole-heartedly recommend them to any traveller. I run my own tour company, Aspiring Adventures, in Peru, so I know what to look for in an agency. And when I was looking for a travel agency in Riobamba with reputable climbing guides (to help me on my quest to climb Chimborazo), Julio Verne stood out by far! Popkje in the office was on the ball with replying to all my questions before the climb. The hire gear was impeccable. Jaime my climbing guide has exactly the type of personality you want in a mountain guide at those sorts of altitudes - calm, caring, responsive, and safety conscious. Thank you so much Julio Verne!

My wife and I had a fantastic time with Julio Verne Travel on their Chimborazo and Hidden Valley mountain bike adventure! There are at least 5-8 mountain bike operators in Riobamba, and one operator is already well reviewed on Trip Advisor. The initial reason we went with Julio Verne Travel was that it is just 2 blocks from the Riobamba train station, so we could easily find them so we could check it out what was on offer - as you never know what you get! We were immediately impressed! At front of the Julio Verne shop there was freshly cleaned, full suspension Cannondale and GT mountain bikes, and front suspension Trek 7000’s all lined up ready to go. Wow! The owner, a Dutch lady who had been operating in Riobamba for 18 years, offered us several mountain bike day tour options, of which we chose the “Hidden Valley” for which we paid $52 each. Unlike most Chimborazo trips which effectively down hills from the refugio back towards Riobamba - the same way you just drove there, the Hidden Valley trip down hills from Chimborazo to the national park gates, where you are then transferred to the top of the Hidden Valley road where you down hill towards Ambato. The next day we met at the shop around 8.30 and were fitted with extremely good Giro bicycle helmets, elbow pads, knee pads, gloves, rain paints and a balaclava. We met our very nice, very good English speaking guide Luis, who drove us the 1 hour ride from Riobamba to Chimborazo refugio at 4800m in a great Toyota Landcruiser Prado. Luis our guide stayed at the rufigo to make what was to be a delicious lunch while my wife and I walked up the clearly marked trail to the Whymper refugio at 5000m – an easy 45min walk up hill. Although very cloudy, we did get incredible glimpses of Chimborazo and the surrounds through the cloud breaks. Amazing! After lunch we geared up for the downhill from the refugio at 4800m to the national park gates at 4000m. My wife who initially said the previous day “No its Ok you can go by yourself, I will stay at the hotel” and had not been on a bike in 10 years or more, was initially a little nervous. However after our guide gave good instructions on how the bike worked and how to be safe, we were off. The down hill is awesome! Go as fast (which is really fast on a pretty decent dirt road with only a few sections of small corrugations and pot holes, at least that was when we were there) or as slow as you want. On the way down there were small herds of Vicunas (a small lama) grazing around, and great views. Luis our guide either respectfully drove behind us, or went out front to take photos of us on the way down. At the National Park Gates my wife (now smiling ear to ear under her balaclava) and I then were transferred to the village of San Luis - the top of the second section of down hill. All on paved road this is essentially a 50km down hill ride (I think it is a 1.2km altitude change) through spectacular scenery! Really it is spectacular! Ok 50km sounds like a long way, but we cycled 1.5 hours had second lunch, and then about another 1.5 hours to Ambato. In all of this 3 hour ride there was about 5 minutes of easy uphill climb. We loved this trip! Julio Verne Travel was extremely professional, they had excellent equipment that was well looked after, and professional guides. Luis even pulled over to the side of the road and stopped the car to answer his cell phone on the way home! This is an excellent and highly recommended adventure!
I had a a very unique trip to Ecuador where I managed to climb Rucu Pichincha, Iliniza Norte and Cayambe within 1 week time and fantastic recoveries in various lodges in between. Edgar's team gave me assurance starting from the airport pick up until the last day with a very detailed organization skills and punctuality. The personal guide Ivan Herrera was a fantastic example of how the mountain guide should be. Even though the language barrier prevailed, I have managed to communicate with him effectively on the mountains. Not a single time I was feeling uncomfortable during the climbing, whether it is a wind, rain, snow, day or night. Everything went very fine. I will definitely be considering returning to Ecuador to tackle Chimborazo volcano separately.
Thank a lot to Lonely Summits for our first experience with hight altitude climbing, especially to Edgar who was so important and friendly person during our 8 days climbing advanture. Everthing was perfect, timed, and finaly when I had some healthy problems he accomodated our plan and we replaced the Chimborazo for Cotopaxi and so we had a chance to be on the summit of almost 6k mouintain. Once to be in Ecuador we also visited Galapagos and Amozonia. We asked the Lonely Summits Trave Agancy for arranging it and also - everthing worked perfectly. Just adding last note - we are working now with Edgar on the plan for next year. Some volcanos in Ecuador and then Peru - Cordilera Blanca.

A fantastic company whose services I used while in Ecuador. I booked a trip to the Amazon in Cuyabeno and a climb up Chimborazo. Everything was handled honestly, transparently, and with excellent organization. They also have a great hotel in Quito, making the entire experience seamless and convenient. In addition to these tours, they offer many other options. The easiest way is to visit their hotel in Quito or contact them via WhatsApp, and they’ll take care of everything you need. We contacted Ecuador Eco Adventures to climb Antisana. Wlado convinced us to climb Chimborazo as the conditions were much better there. Our trip was organised with only a few days notice, it just incredible how quickly Wlado was able to arrange all of the logistics for us so quickly. He was in contact with us multiple times a day confirming all of the arrangements and allaying our fears about the weather and the conditions on the mountain. We were actually so close to pulling out last minute because we were so concerned about the conditions on Chimborazo but we are so thankful that Wladi convinced us to go. Our trip was seamless. We caught a red eye flight from Mexico City and were picked up from Quito Airport and driven to the company’s Chimborazo base camp where we arranged our gear and had a wonderful lunch. Then we were driven to the Chimborazo Refugio where we started our hike to high camp. Our guide Wily is a highly experienced and skilled ASEGUIM guide who is also just the most kind and friendly human being. He kept us going when things got tough and kept us very safe. We absolutely loved our time with him on Chimborazo! After our phenomenal summit, we were transferred back to Quito. The whole trip was so easy from a logistical perspective so all we had to do was focus on the climb. I arranged for the one night/2 day climb of Chimborazo from high camp with Pablo as my private guide. Pablo was the best choice of all. It was an honor to climb Chimborazo with Pablo. He was the perfect combination of talented, fun, attentive, encouraging and safety focused. I was also impressed with Willy and Fausto who I met at camp. It was also a huge advantage staying at ‘High Camp’. It seems Ecuador EcoAdventure attracts great guides and is the way to go to climb in Ecuador. I’ve read a lot that makes Chimborazo sound more technical than it was. Maybe not the place to first use crampons, but the main thing is to arrive in Ecuador for and of course acclimatize well.

I booked a package to climb 4 volcanoes including Chimborazo, the highest peak in Ecuador. The selection of volcanoes was customized for me to better prepare the skills and acclimatize. The logistics including transportation, food and stay was all included so I didn't need to worry about anything. The guides for the peaks were friendly, professional and helpful. They knew the peaks very well to help me navigate, use gears and monitor my status. I summit all the volcanoes including 3 5k+ and Chimborazo, a 6k+ peak. It was a demanding trip but a huge achievement and a great gateway for other high peaks in future.

We climbed Chimborazo with E.E.A at very short notice yet Wlady and team were able to sort everything we needed, with good quality/condition kit (all technical kit was Black Diamond) available at the office before we left Riobamba and organised us an English speaking guide as our still limited Spanish is not ideal for such a challenging climb! I believe all guides are freelance so work for multiple companies. Our guide, Patricio, was friendly, very experienced and absolutley knew what he was doing. On the climb from low camp to high he gave us space to enjoy the walk together but when game time came, he was over every little detail. The Base Camp EEA use (Casa Condor) far, far, surpassed our expectations with a newly built modern chalet and great meals provided by Diego. Jo unexpectedly required medical items from the pharmacy and Jose the owner of Casa Condor immediately stopped what he was working at and drove me to the nearest town of San Juan 30 mins away! High Camp at 5300m provided a great base to get a couple of hours rest and good meals before and after the climb. Wlady, the owner of EEA, was always available to answer any questions on WhatsApp and actually arrived at Base Camp and came to our chalet to persoanlly wish us well on go day. Chimborazo is a challenging climb on a serious mountain. Aclimatisation is key but it is also technical to degree. You are using crampons and an ice axe whilst roped to your guide. I recommend previous experience using these or book one of EEA's multi summit packages. Ask lots and lots of questions. If you are not in great physical condition this will be very difficult to summit and even then I believe the success rate for the mountain is less than 50% Top Tips: 1) prepare physically (months in advance) 2) aclimatisation 3) crampon/ glacier experience in advance Thank you to Wlady, Patricio, Diego & Jose

An amazing trip we will remember for the rest of our lives. We landed in Quito and hiked up El Panecillo on our first day to start acclimatization. The next day we self-guided ourselves up Rucu Pichincha, Ladrillos, and Padre Encantado. This ended up being our most intense day for managing the effects of higher elevations (15km, 1600m, mostly over 4,000 m elevation). The following morning, our guide picked us up at our Airbnb in Quito. We stopped for snacks, stopped to get a climbing permit, and made our way up Illiniza Norte. Our guide (Edwin) was awesome! He shared a lot of information, history, and lore about the area. We really enjoyed the scrambling on Illiniza. That night we stayed at an Andean Lodge. Edwin made us dinner and played a few songs he was learning on la quena. After breakfast the next day, we were driven to Chimborazo Basecamp where we would spend the next 3 nights in a dome tent with a perfect view of Chimborazo. That night we woke up at midnight to climb Carihuairazo with a different guide named Manuel (?). He didn't speak much English, so I practiced my Spanish with the help of Google Translate. We ended up summitting in the dark and with a cold wind, we decided not to wait for sunrise. I'm sure the view is nice up there... We rested at Basecamp for a day and a half before making the approach to Chimborazo High Camp at 5,300m. We had Wily for our guide and he was awesome... the 3 of us had a lot of fun! After dinner, we managed to get about 5 hours of sleep/rest before waking up at 12:30am for a quick breakfast. Pushing ourselves to acclimatize over 6 days paid off. We reached Vientimilla in 4.25 hours, and Whymper (main summit) took another 30 minutes. On the summit, I proposed to my girlfriend while the sun was rising and Volcan Sangay was erupting. It was perfect! We don't usually hire guides at home (Canadian Rockies) unless we're learning technical skills. Ecuador law requires foreigners to hire certified guides to travel on glaciated terrain, and we are happy we chose Ecuador Eco Adventure. They took care of logistics, and we managed our personal gear. We still felt a degree of independence by having input to our pace and the occasional route-finding. It was like climbing with another climbing partner, rather than being "guided" up a mountain. Plus Wily was there to capture our proposal! Although supplied by EEA, we were happy to have brought our own mountaineering boots, harnesses, helmets, and poles. Mostly for comfort-sake. We brought our own sleeping bags for High Camp. We also brought a lot of our own snacks that we would typically have at home (bars, gels, etc) There's lots of food supplied, but snacks are more junk food than nutritional.

I had a great experience with Ecuador Eco Adventure! I successfully summited Chimborazo ✌️ Communication was great to book the trip, the equipment was in good condition, the guide (Mauricio) was excellent! Everything went well, as planned, I had a fantastic time and I would recommend Ecuador Eco Adventure to anyone who want to climb Chimborazo!

We did the 4 peaks adventure including Iliniza Norte, Cayambe, Antisana (Cotopaxi was closed) and Chimborazo. Cristian and Willy were amazing guides. They were safe, responsive, and brought a lot of positive energy. I hope to climb with them again next year!

Visited Ecuador in July 2022 with friends to attempt Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. We reached out to Wlady at Ecuador Eco Adventure and he set everything up for us. We talked through the mountains we wanted to climb, the dates we had in mind, the rest days we wanted and Wlady took care of the details. We attempted Illiniza Norte, before talking a couple rest days and attempting Cotopaxi, then two more rest days before attempting Chimborazo. Once we where in country, it was easy to connect with Wlady over whatsapp and everything went according to schedule. We were not able to summit Illinizia Norte as a storm hit us at 16,000ft, but our guide Wily was great and the lodge on the mountain had hot tea which made for a perfect relaxing acclimatization. We stayed at the Wasi Andina Lodge with Wily and his family for a couple nights, where his wife Grace cooked us meals from fresh produce, we had hot showers and WI-FI. We enjoyed the family environment and friendly animals of this Andian homestead. Once we left, we stayed a nice at the Cotopaxi lodge, which is by far the nicest mountain refugio i've ever been in. Beds, mattresses, pillows, endless hot chocolate and great food. Wily and Paul guided us up Cotopaxi the next morning. It was cloudy, snowing, and gusting 40mph winds but our guides had full control over everything. We moved with purpose and was able to summit in about 5 hours. After Cotopaxi we moved to Riobamba for one night where we stayed at the Ecuador Eco Adventure headquarters. The services here were pretty basic. Warm bed, hot shower and WIFI. They keep their rental gear here so it was a great time to try on boots, pants, googles, etc... Next we moved to the Chimborazo base camp. This place was great. Fastest WIFI in Ecuador... hot showers, comfy beds, option to stay in the house or glamp it one of their domes. Manuel stayed with us for both nights and prepared all our meals and kept hot water going. This place has an amazing view of Chimborazo. As a bonus its located right next to Hotel Casa Condor which is a cool community that was developed years ago by a Canadian man who came to Ecuador to do development work. The community has since moved on, but if you talk to the folks at the hotel they will happily tell you all about it and sell you some locally made Alpaca goods as well :) Finally we moved on to the Chimborazo high camp at 17,500 feet. Both the Carrell and the Whymper refugios are closed on the mountain so this is the best option for summit access. You sleep on mattress and pillows inside of one of the domes they have build on the mountain. There is a separate dome dedicated as the kitchen which made great food and had hot tea and chocolate going. The sunset views from high camp where stunning. Paul and Jose guided us up Chimborazo. We started at midnight and summited in about 6 hours. The mountain was covered in snow and the final push was really difficult as sliding and post holing stole what little energy we had. Paul and Jose kept in communication using walkie talkies the whole climb. They conversed over mountain conditions and we discussed turning back once, but ultimately Jose was able to guide us to the summit! Back at high camp we where rewarded with a pizza and then got transportation back to Riobamba where we met Wlady and hopped a car back to Quito. Overall we had a really great experience with Ecuador Eco Adventure. Wladys has access to great guides, lodging and transportation and his services helped us cross two big peaks off our bucket list. We are grateful to him, our guides Wily, Paul, Jose and the entire team!

I contacted Wlady, from Ecuador Eco Adventures to organise a climb to the mighty 6000+m Chimborazo in June 2022. From the beginning he was super responsive and professional advicing me on the best way to tackle this challenge. I ended up doing a couple of days hiking around their base camp and the Carihuarazo climb (5000m) as aclimatization with Ecuador Eco Adventures. These activites were perfectly planned by Wlady's team which was an awesome group of mountain professionals, from the guides to the guys preparing meals and handling the accomodation. I stayed in the base camp refugio which was very comfortable (hot showers and WIFI!). Also had a look at the domos which are next door and look fantastic. Not really a tent but a mini house with a proper bed and bathroom. The Carihuarazo climb was amazing. We started at 2am with torches and made the summit on time for the sunset. It is a bit technical in the end but totally doable for an experienced hiker and Wlady's guys were always on top of things to make you feel secure. We were three and we had two great guides. On the way down skies cleared and we had spectacular views of the Ecuatorian Andes. Then the day of the Chimborazo came. After the proper acclimatization I really felt super prepared for it but unfortunately something very unexpected got on the way. On the way up to the mountain we started to get very concerning news about road closures caused by indigenous people protesting. Wlady kept me informed at all times and, as the situation seemed to be escalating, he made the call to abort the hike to not risk me getting stuck in Riobamba and unable to get to my flight to Galápagos on time. It turned out this was the right decision. As I am writing this review, almost two weeks after, the roads are still closed and the situation only got worse with lots of tourists stranded there. Wlady's call saved the rest of my trip. Thankfully he was alwyas properly informed and concerned about the situation. I have been following him on social media and he has been organising flights to get people back home. Moreover, he refunded the money I paid for climbing the Chimborazo. This says a lot of his professional ethics considering the situation he was at that point, unable to get any bussiness due to factors completely external to him. I think I was particularly unluckly to be there at the wrong time. Ecuador is a beautiful and very welcoming country and the hiking/climbing around Riobamba is just amazing. I have no doubts I will come back to try the Chimbo again and I will surely do it with Ecuador Eco Adventures.

We were on a trip to climb Cotopaxi and Chimborazo when the country shut down due to protests and riots. After climbing Cotopaxi, the guides and Wlady secured transportation for us to be able to leave the country safely. Excellent communication through the entire process and extremely friendly and safe guides. I strongly recommend to this company to anyone who is wanting to climb or tour in Ecuador.

The guides were incredibly knowledgeable, safety-oriented, and professional, which lead to two successful summits! Wlady and the guides went above and beyond. They also spoke excellent English, which was very helpful for me when communicating logistics on and off the mountain. I adventured with Ecuador Eco Adventures for 5 days in late November 2021 and climbed Cotopaxi and almost summited Chimborazo, ( had to abort due to heavy snowfall). The trip was amazing- what a great adventure. The equipment included and provided via Wlady and team was great. The guides, Patricio, Willy and Christian was phenomenal & trustworthy. Besides the experience to be on the volcanos, the stat at Casa Condor, just outside Rio Bamba was so nice and Anita and staff were so genuine and kind. Book this adventure and live it up!

I had a great experience with Ecuador Eco Adventures! My partner and I planned a trip to summit and ski Cayambe, Cotopaxi, and Chimborazo. I’ve always wanted to ski the equator, and Cayambe is the only place to do it. It was a beautiful summit and we had surprisingly good corn snow for the long (800M+) ski descent. It was genuinely good skiing and we had a ton of fun! We got unlucky with the weather on Cotopaxi and had to turn back before even reaching the glacier. That’s how it goes sometimes. We had another amazing experience on Chimborazo. The climb was very cool, with a challenging/fun approach and a beautiful glacier. The summit was unreal and we had decent snow for the ski. It was very special to ski at 6,000M, and there were good turns to be had. It was a lot of work to ski the peaks. The approach/climb isn’t very long on any of them, but nothing is easy at that elevation. There is definitely better skiing to be found in the world for less time, effort, and money. The turns are never worth it if you don’t enjoy the climb! Don’t expect fresh pow! Ski Mountaineering isn’t for everyone, but if it’s your thing, then I’d highly recommend skiing the equator. I’d also highly recommend Ecuador Eco Adventures. I’ve never done a guided trip like this before and neither had my partner. But, this was great. We didn’t have a ton of time on the trip, so it was huge to have the logistics taken care of for us, and at a price we could afford. It’s a very good price for what you get. Thanks again, Wlady and Christian!!! I’m always down to share/trade information on off-the-beaten-path skiing (or fishing) spots. Hit me up if you want more info. [email protected]

Wow! What an amazing experience this was. During 2020, I picked up mountaineering as a long time yearn for exploring my physical and mental capabilities. There is Something magical about climbing the highest peaks on earth. I decided to dive in and climb Chimborazo. When I was exploring options for guidance on the beautiful volcanos, I came across Eco adventures. As all the other guide services were way more expensive, Eco was local and offered way more of an authentic experience. They also offer some of the best guides in the area. When I reached out, they were very communicative, always with a quick response. From the pre-planning to post climbs, eco delivered their best. On the volcanos, the guides were all very well trained, friendly, and knowledgeable. My personal guide Christian was a world class rock-climber and such a patient soul when I needed more instruction for certain technicalities. I highly recommended this guiding service as it’s an overall best option in my eyes. We needed to climbing 3 volcanoes but will be back for 3 more soon!

Recently took a climbing expedition with my guide Paul, which led to successful summits of Cotopaxi & Chimborazo. Paul was very knowledgeable of both mountains of which he has probably climbed both over 400x. We were subject to some pretty crazy weather, especially on Cotopaxi, but that did not stop us. Wlady was also very hospitable and made sure i was squared away throughout the process.

My climbing partner and I just returned to the States after using Vlady to organize our Cotopaxi and Chimborazo climbs. Vlady's guides are fantastic. Each one has climbed Coto/Chimborazo between 300-400 times. You will be in great hands. Having climbed in many other countries, the refugio on Cotopaxi and high camp on Chimborazo were awesome! I HIGHLY recommend the extra bucks for high camp on Chimborazo. Vlady lives in Riobamba and knows the best restaurants to dine at, as well. I am sure you will have a great experience with Vlady and his team of top notch guides.

We were a party of 13 that spent 12 days in Ecuador. Wlady took care of all our individual needs and was readily available to help us out at a moment's notice. He had carefully planned the schedule and made sure that all of us acclimatized well. We all ate good food despite being vegetarian and it being hard to find establishments that serve vegetarian food. My original itinerary included climbing Cayambe, Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. The first acclimatization hike was supposed to be on Rucu Pichnicha. The park was closed. It was Christmas eve and still Wlady quickly replanned our hike to Guagua Pichnicha. We faced an ice storm on our Cayambe hike and most of us had to turn back. 10 of the team members were able to summit Cotopaxi. A small part of the team did not want to climb Chimborazo and changed the itinerary to accommodate an easier neighboring summit in Carihuairazo. Wlady arranged for new guides, split the group and was able to accommodate changes in an efficient manner. He paired two people each with an English speaking guide. He rented out the equipment that we had not brought/owned. He constantly communicated with us and was very patient with all our inquiries. I was a newbie to this and he made my experience a memorable one. I highly recommend him and his team since they do give a personal touch. We were sometimes lodging in facilities where we were the only occupants and the hosts went above and beyond to provide good service.

Where do I even begin....We went on a 12 day trip that included climbing Cayambe, Cotopaxi and Chimborazo! One of the best trips I had with my family and friends. Wlady runs a very organized and efficient team. He has some of the best guides who took care of us in the mountains, keeping us safe during the climb and the return. And Wlady took care of all the little things, from our dietary requirements and preferences to the last minute requests for extra gloves. Wlady also had good contingency planning in place when things didn't go according to plan. This company gets 99.999 out of 100 from me. They could get a 100 when they start managing the unpredictable Ecuadorian weather. :) Kidding aside, I would highly recommend Ecuador Eco Adventure

The trip I planned through Ecuador Eco Adventures was one of the best experiences of my life! Words can hardly describe the joy I felt after successfully summitting Cayambe, Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. My stars were aligned on this trip. It all began with me reaching out to Wlady on What’s App. He was always available to answer every question I had, and he constructed the perfect itinerary for me, with rest days and acclimatization carefully factored in. Most incredibly, I decided a mere two weeks in advance that I’d be coming to Ecuador, and within a day or two, Wlady hustled to put all the wheels in motion. The weather in mid December was darn near perfect, and I felt confident in my preparation and conditioning. Everything I needed for success on these mountains was at my fingertips. I will be frank, when you sign up for one of these tough mountain climbs, understand that YOU are the number one factor that will determine the success of your trip. Cayambe, Cotopaxi, and especially Chimborazo are not beginner climbs. They are serious mountains at high altitude. Come prepared and your guides will be able to get you there! If you are coming from the United States, I recommend learning crampon techniques and ice ax self arrest on a lower-elevation mountain like Rainier. These climbs in Ecuador are very quick, and there isn’t much time to train these necessary skills if you don’t already possess them. Instead, you want your focus in Ecuador to be on acclimatizing to the extreme altitude, not learning how to climb. Wlady has wonderful suggestions on how to acclimatize, and with his help, We put together a great program. First step included staying in Quito several nights at over 9,000 feet, climbing Ruco Pinchincha (15,400’) which is easily accessed via cable car, and then increasing elevation with each mountain- Cayambe, Cotopaxi, And finally Chimborazo. I was on a “staircase” as Wlady put it! Endurance training should also be part of your conditioning. Expect to be moving 12 hours to go to the summit of Chimborazo and back. Walking, or hiking long distances is the best thing you can do to be ready. I found it advantageous to bring my own gear, and climbing clothing, because I was already familiar on how to use it. Whatever you don’t bring, Ecuador Eco Adventure is happy to provide, and their gear is highly functional! Once you have adequately prepared, all you have left to do is trust the highly qualified ASEGUIM guides who will show you to the summits! :) All three guides I had- Juan Carlos Silva for Cayambe, Wily Rivera for Cotopaxi, and Jose Gualancañay were exceptional. The only thing I will do differently in the future is learn more Spanish. While you can get around Ecuador fine with English alone, speaking Spanish will only enhance the experience! So, I’ll be hitting Duolingo hard the next few months and practicing with Spanish speakers in my homestate of New Mexico. One thing is for certain. I will come back to Ecuador, and will once again enlist the services of Ecuador Eco Adventures. This trip was the start of what will be a lifelong love for this beautiful country.

We organized a Cotopaxi and Chimborazo climb and highly recommend Ecuador Eco Adventure. From the start, the owner Wlady was extremely responsive and took the time to answer the countiess questions I had - he was an absolute pleasure to interact with and is extremely professional and went above and beyond to ensure our experience was executed flawlessly. Every precaution is taken for COVID and we felt safe and secure the entire time. My guide for Cotopaxi and Chimborazo was Paul Hinojosa and he is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. He is undoubtedly the person you want guiding you on these challenging climbs given his decades of experience and high level of expertise. His English skills are excellent so communication was easy and I found his personable and warm nature an invaluable source of encouragement and support. He's simply fantastic and hands down the guide you want if he's available. We were able to successfully summit Cotopaxi which was a wonderful experience thanks go Paul. He saw that I was just focused on the climb and wasn't able to take many photos, so without asking he took loads of pictures of me and the scenery and I can't express how much those photos mean to me. He's so thoughtful and knew it was something I'd treasure. Although the weather for Chimborazo didn't allow for a summit due to avalanche risk, I had a great time heading to high camp with Paul and our porter Fernando (you must request him - he's amazing). I felt so taken care of as it started to snow, they quickly set up our tent and had hot soup ready almost immediately. The owner Wlady was incredibly responsive and flexible helping us with our changing schedule and preferences which is a testimony to his high level of professionalism (and patience :-) - we are admittedly high maintenance clients!) Bottomline, Ecuador Eco Adventure is the top climbing operator in the country and I recommend them without hesitation. The owner is working on opening lodging in Chimborazo and I'm sure it will be fantastic. Wlady will do everything possible to ensure the best possible experience and maximize your chances of summiting.

Acclimatisation is essential before attempting to climb Chimborazo, something that Wlady was incredibly knowledgeable about and helpful in ensuring I had made all necessary preparations beforehand. The self-guided trek to El Altar at the beginning of the wet was almost entirely along a muddy track, however the effort was well-rewarded once I reached Laguna Amarilla which offers spectacular views. Gradually ascending and spending a night at Paradero Chakana continued the acclimatisation process, and the next day I was met by Fausto, my guide with 28 years climbing experience who was equally friendly and professional as Wlady. During our ascension of Chimborazo, in the dark Fausto was able to recognise that a section of ice was unsuitable and dangerous for climbing and so created a new path which helped ensure my safe and successful summit attempt at dawn the following morning. Though mountaineering is a dangerous activity and all risks should be considered before embarking upon a climb, I had absolute confidence in the staff at Ecuador Eco Adventure from start to finish keeping me safe and providing a thoroughly rewarding experience.

My climbing partner and I decided to hire local guides for a summit attempt on Cotopaxi. We wanted to climb with experienced professionals who had good knowledge of the mountain, its weather, the local culture and the local climbing community. We were not disappointed. Our research brought us to the guiding services of Ecuador Eco Adventure, a firm based out of Riobamba. The company President, Wladimir (Wlady) Ortiz was responsive and accommodating. His willingness to answer all of our questions (and there were many!) affirmed confidence in our decision to hire his firm. He remained in close contact with us throughout, coordinating logistics, transportation, gear, permits, guide meet-up, and lodging & food at the “refugio”. Our guide, Santiago Naveda, had an impressive climbing resumé with more than 25 ascents of Cotopaxi, 56 ascents of Chimborazo, and successful ascents of more challenging & technical peaks including El Altar, and Alpamayo. His English was great. Santiago transported us to the base of the mountain. He provided a delicious lunch and dinner with lots of carbs and calories. He briefed us on the climb. He advised us on layering, and gave us with ample time to rest before the start of our ascent. We went to sleep (or attempted to) at 6:30PM in a room filled with about 20 bunk beds and awoke at 11:45PM, and after one last hot chocolate (for hydration & calories) we set off into the darkness. The air was still and dry. Santiago led the way, successfully finding and keeping the path throughout the moonless night. He maintained a moderate and consistent pace, and he routinely instructed us on the use of ropes, axe, and climbing technique. His presence was reassuring, especially when navigating around deep crevasses which we encountered along the route. There was never a doubt about his competency or his professionalism. We topped out at sunrise, with clear skies in every direction. The view from the 19,347' summit was beyond words, and my partner and I were overcome with emotion. Tungurahua, Chimborazo, Ilinizas, Cayambe, Antisana, and Reventador were all in plain sight. Cotopaxi's foreboding caldera dropped steeply beside us, and we could look straight down in all directions as far as the eye could see. To say that it was an unforgettable moment is an understatement. There really are no words to adequately describe the beauty of that place at that moment. We will never forget. Santiago told us that we would spend only 10-15 mins on the summit. The temperature was very cold, around zero degrees, and when the wind suddenly blew across the caldera we breathed in the strong smell of sulfur coming up from the belly of the volcano. Cotopaxi had allowed us to summit, but she was telling us it was now time to go. We reluctantly set off. The descent was smooth and uneventful. The skies remained clear and we could see the Refugio, now 3,700' below us. We continued to enjoy views of the surrounding countryside and other volcanoes as Santiago guided us down the mountain. We moved quicky and safely. Back at the Refugio we celebrated our success over a simple breakfast and some hot tea. Then we gathered our gear and made the final 20 min trek down to Santiago's vehicle. Our Cotopaxi climb was complete. Would I recommend Ecuador Eco Adventures? Yes. That said, there are some opportunities for improvement, which I'll suggest below, but overall I am pleased with Wlady Ortiz, and the experience of our climb. Santiago was excellent. Will I climb with Ecuador Eco Adventure again? Yes. Opportunities for improvement 1. Provide a written itinerary. 2. Do a thorough gear check. 3. Improve communication (aside from Wlady) Other suggestions on helpful things to bring (some of which you can leave at base camp): - Energy snacks/power bars that you are accustomed to. It’s hard to find good fuel in Ecuador and an over ripe banana and crackers do not make for good packing or fuel (which is what we were provided). - A camera that won’t freeze or die in the cold - Extra batteries - Diamox (if worried about the altitude) - Headache medicine - Toilet paper or tissues - Toothbrush & toothpaste - Sunscreen & chapstick - Wet wipes - Extra pair of contact lenses (if needed) - Eye mask (for keeping the light out in the night when others are waking up). -Ear plugs - Change of clothes for after the hike - Your appetite, for some great Ecuadorian food at the Refugio. - Your humility in the presence of such gracious Ecuadorian hosts.

Wlady helped organize a fantastic custom trip for me to climb Cotopaxi. My parents decided to join fairly last minute at the Tambo Paxi lodge (so nice) and Wlady helped us organize transport and everything quite real-time. He is EXTREMELY responsive on WhatsApp which was hugely appreciated. He assigned me José as my guide, who was very experienced and understood I was nervous about the altitude and so had a fantastic (slow) pace on our climb, and also helped me with my crampons and pack when he noticed I was quite tired due from altitude. I was able to summit and we came down quickly. I felt absolutely safe with Jose and you should totally ask for him if you’re booking with Wlady!! I will absolutely book with Wlady and his team again when I’m back for Chimborazo... thank you for a great experience.

I definitely recommend Ecuador Eco Adventure. I had an enjoyable (and successful) three-day climb of Chimborazo in January 2019. The guide was great, and all of the technical equipment supplied was very good quality - some of the non-technical items I borrowed (e.g. gloves) were a bit old so if you have your own, bring them. We successfully made it to the summit, even though the conditions were pretty bad so not everyone made it - four successful out of about ten people attempting that day. Wlady was very helpful throughout the booking and preparation process. If you want to acclimatise in luxury, maybe go for one of the more expensive tours, but considering how much more expensive most other tours are, all of the important stuff is exactly the same.

A group of Seven friends and myself from Denver organized a trip to climb Chimborazo through Eco Adventures. The communication and attention from Wlady (owner) was flawless, quick, and extremely sensitive to all our needs. He responded to all of our concerns and emails quickly, and even as we kept adding members to our trip (we started with 2, than added 2 more, than 3 more) he accommodated all of our needs. We organized a trip that was perfect for our needs and within the budget we needed. It was especially helpful that he organized rides to/from Quito and almost everything was included. Very thankful for the hard work of this crew. Finally, on a separate trip to Ecuador they also helped me to organize tours in the Galapagos. As I run a small non-profit it is important to find trustworthy and reliable friends on the ground that are affordable as well. Very happy with the service up to this point!

I went with Wlady and Ecuador Eco Tours to climb Chimborazo and can absolutely recommend them to anyone looking to climb the peak furtherst from the center of the Earth! I showed up in Riobamba the day before I wanted to climb and Wlady was able to arrange absolutely everything I needed. He had all the extra climbing equipment available in a variety of sizes, he explained the different options for acclimatization, and even set me and few other climbers up in a mountain lodge below Chimborazo for an extra night of preparation. The actual climb was excellent as well. My guide, Telmo, was an absolute pro, and without his help and encouragement, I would have had no chance of getting to the summit. Don’t be fooled, this is a tough, tough mountain, but Wlady and his team give you a great chance to reach the top. Thank you!

My experience with Ecuador Eco Adventure will never be forgotten, I met some great people and made great memories in my week with this tour operator. The owner Wlad made me feel at home right from the start. I arrived two days before my 3 day trek which was used as an aclimatisation period for my main goal of climbing Chimborazo. Those two days Wlad was kind enough to let me stay at his property. Accommodation was fantastic and I had use of his kitchen if I needed it. As I am travelling South America I didn't have every piece of equipment needed for the packages so before arrival I had exchanged multiple emails with Wlad in which he explained thoroughly what I needed and what he would provide. I will add that Wlad was always extremely quick replying to any of my questions. My 3 day trek was fantastic even with some pretty crazy weather conditions. I joined on the Ingaprica trek with another guy and we were provided with a guide and 2 other helpers that lived in the Sangay area. They tended to the horse and two donkeys and helped with the cooking and setting up of camp. Our main guide was great, he spoke enough English for me to learn and understand things about the area and trek. It was also really fun to practise my broken Spanish and to share knowledge on each other's languages. Our climb of Chimborazo was well planned with the trek being the first part of the aclimatisation we then spent a night at a high altitude refuge then entered the NP on the day of the climb to spend some more hours at 5000m before the night climb. I will add that the trek days and climb days all food was provided. I was fortunate to have a good size group and also some experienced climbers with me. There was plenty of guides too. Unfortunately we didn't make summit because if dangerous conditions. As a novice there was a point where I didn't feel completely comfortable with the potential dangerous conditions and as they worsened I had to put all my trust into my guide to make a decision to carry on or turn back. He made the right choice in turning back when we did as some of the more experienced climbers carried on and experienced a small avalanche and also hurried down. Even thought we didn't complete the climb I was extremely happy with my experience and choosing Ecuador Eco Adventures as I was in the best hands throughout the week, whether thay be at Wlad's house, on a 4500m pass or on the side of Chimborazo climbing up a frozen rock face. I can say that in my short time with Wlad I have made a friend that I want to come back and visit at some point and give Chimbo a second shot. If you are wanting an operator in the Riobamba area Wlad's your man. Thanks, an experience I'll never forget.

I recently climbed Chimborazo through EcuadorEcoAdventure. Wladimir, the owner was thoroughly helpful and friendly from start to finish. The price was fair and he gave me an acclimatisation plan that didn’t require a guide to help me save money too. I was given accommodation in a double bed ensuite upon returning from my acclimatisation trek. Wlady also offered to pick me up from the bus station. For the actual climb there were two of us going with EEA, with a guide each. Everything was provided, transport, food, equipment, accomdation. Only suitable warm and waterproof clothing was needed. Santiago and Fausto were both really experienced and very nice, they had both both climbed the mountain over 50 times. Fausto was my guide and he was fantastic with regards to pacing the whole trek to make sure I got to the top. They were both really friendly and informative throughout. One thing I would recommend if trying to climb Chimborazo on a budget is to pay a bit of extra money to climb a 5500m or so mountain beforehand. I climbed Mt. Altar at 4400m, which was very convenient because it’s near Riobamba and a guide wasn’t needed, but to have the best chance of summiting Chimborazo I think another higher climb would be prudent.

Some friends and I arranged a climb of Chimborazo through Wlady and Ecuador Eco Adventure, and everything went great! All three guides provided were simply amazing (Talmo, Santiago and Paul) with fluent English spoken by two, and passable English from the other (as advertised). They were consummate professionals on the mountain, and great to hang out with at the Refugio, and it made for a great climb. Outside of the mountain, Wlady and family did everything to make our trip easy and comfortable, even going so far as to bring our delayed luggage from Quito! We stayed at their new hostel for one night, and for the price found it to be just fine. It’s still a work in progress and there were a few kinks, but those got worked out quickly, and no complaints. Overall, I’d recommend Wlady and EEA for this sort of thing without reservation. (Also didn’t hurt that he had the best prices for a climb of this sort.)

Visited Wlady in Riobamba looking for a hiking adventure. We booked a climb up Mt. Chimborazo. 1st class gear was included and guide Eloy was terrific. His limited English was enough to communicate essentials but his 500 trips up the mountain was most important. Wlady also helped us with acclimatizing trips to El Altar (fantastic refugio overnight stay) and the base of Chimborazo. Wlady also provided overnight accommodations at his house/office which was convenient, comfortable and affordable. A great five day trip to the Chimborazo area.

I found Ecuador Eco Adventure through it’s partner organization, Ecuador Eco Volunteer. I spent three weeks working on an alpaca farm in the Chimborazo Province with the most welcoming community of indigenous farmers. Getting to experience this lifestyle is something I’ll never forget. It was also great acclimitization/preparation for the climbing I then did through Ecuador Eco Adventure. I trekked El Altar, climbed Cotopaxi, and attempted Chimborazo, but was turned back due to poor quality of snow that could’ve resulted in an avalanche. (That’s ok, I’ll be back!!!) More than anything, though, was the friendship I was able to make with Wlady, the owner of EEA. He was extremely knowledgeable and insightful and helped me plan my adventures in Ecuador way beyond my treks with EEA. He opened his home to me whenever I was in Riobamba, never tried to rip me off, and never made me feel insecure. He also employs local guides, promotes sustainable tourism, and has many incredible community volunteer immersion opportunities all over Ecuador. Overall, I am very pleased with my experience with EEA and am elated to have made this forever connection with Wlad and his company. Muchísimas gracias Ecuador Eco Adventure!!

Wlady & his team offer affordable expeditions & fine hospitality. Climbed Carihuairazo, Cotopaxi & Chimborazo all in a week. I live at 300' above sea level so these elevations are brutal to a low lander, yet the guides, Telmo & Fausto, were very experienced, were patient with my slow progress & helpful whenever needed. Humble accommodations were comfortable, Wlady works hard to make everything flow well & has no reservations about deviating from the plan when needed to be sure it's a good experience to a client. Will definitely be back for other expeditions!

I had initially planned to do Chimborazo but following a bout of sickness at Christmas Wendy recommended that I take a gentler route and do the 1 day climb of Carihuairazo which would be technically interesting but have less altitude. It would also provide great views of the Avenue of Volcanoes. I can attest to both - the climb was very good and I felt generally comfortable with the pace (The guide let me ascend to the summit more slowly than some of the other climbers as I was struggling with stamina). The climb is basically relatively simpler with only a need for short section of climbing with crampon near the summit. The view was extraordinary that morning and I could see almost every major volcano in Ecuador with Chimborazo especially impressive. It is probably the best view of my life. During the descent I coped fairly well until the final few kilometers where I struggled to continue. Nevertheless the guide remained with me and we were able to talk to keep my spirits up. (I spoke sufficient Spanish to do this - I don't know what his English would have been like). I only have 2 complaints - I found the night at the refuge near Chimborazo extremely cold and struggled to sleep. Perhaps some extra blankets could be provided. Secondly on the first afternoon we were encouraged to explore the Paramo around the Refuge but with no clear paths and no guide I felt that it was too easy to get lost. I feel that to miss out on that experience would have been a shame but I do feel somebody should have been prepared to show us a good route.

I attempted to summit Chimborazo with Telmo as my guide and although my climbing skills aren't much and I didn't make it to the summit, Telmo was a brilliant guide, very professional and a really nice guy. As a previous volunteer for Wlady he let me stay in his home with his family and took me to lots of nice local spots! Thanks for making Ecuador such a rememberable place.

Wlady and EEA organize some of the most affordable eco tours in Ecuador, including high-mountain summits. There are many tour companies in the country that do a lot of the same routes and itineraries. EEA is distinguished by offering some of the best prices and best service in the industry. We climbed Chimborazo with EEA. Our guide, Santi, was experienced and friendly and did a great job leading a pair of noobs through nasty conditions on the mountain - no snow below the glacier, so we had to crampon through frozen rocks and dirt for hours. Rough! Since EEA offers very low prices, as one would imagine, the rental gear is not brand-new or top of the line. However, considering what you're paying, the gear gets the job done. What really made my experience with EEA exceptional happened after coming down from the mountain. I had an unbearable altitude headache by the time we got back to Riobamba, and in my semi-conscious departure from town, I managed to leave my sunglasses and two jackets behind (nice, right??). When I realized this and contacted Wlady, he did an absolutely incredible job of getting the gear back to me. He went to our hotel to pick up the jackets I left there, sent the gear to Quito with an overnight courier, and even paid the courier half in advance without ever asking me to repay him. This is the kind of service that distinguishes a provider who really cares about his guests' experience. Mil gracias to Wlady for getting my beloved gear back to me and to Santi for expertly leading us on a challenging summit push. If you are looking for an affordable way to climb Chimbo or Coto, don't mind using gear that isn't fresh out the box, and want the best service out there, get in touch with Wlady!

Eco Adventure were the cheapest agency we could find to climb Volcan Chimborazo. But regardless of price, they were the most professional and helpful. They provided us with expert and friendly guides as well as excellent equipment! We had a few problems with Rangers at the Volcan but the staff at Eco Adventure went above and beyond in helping and supporting us. This was after we had paid and completed the Hike (this is the time many agencies would not give you time or help as they already have your moeny!!) I cannot recommend these guys enough! Thanks you for everything!! Chris (England) Merwan (France) and Rodrigo (Argentina)

We did the Vicuna Trek with Julio Verne as an acclimatisation for the Chimborazo Climb. Julio Verne provided us with an excelent service, all the equipment we were missing was provided for free (or included in the price). The equipment was of a very good quality and the guides - both for the trek and the climb were great - very experienced and attentive. Overall we had a great time with Julio Verne - highly recommended!

I had booked a private climb of Chimborazo with Ecuador Eco Adventure. Wlady was very responsive over WhatsApp and gave me the information I asked for every time. My guide, Wily, was great. He took it slow, safe and easy to make the climb a successful one. He knew when he needed to push me and when to let me catch a breath. Manuel at base camp was kind and cooked up some great meals to get us fueled up. The reasons why I didn’t give a five-star review: - I would have appreciated more proactive communications as the date of the climb approached. For example, a simple reminder of the itinerary, contact number of the driver, etc. would have been appreciated. This information was always available if asked, but as a services company, Ecuador Eco Adventure could be proactive. - Similarly, once the climb began, it would have been helpful if the guides provided an overview of the climb, asked for questions, etc. It otherwise felt very transactional. - Some of the gear I received was broken or not cleaned. The pants had medicine from the previous wearer. One of the gaiters had a broken zipper (Wlady kindly sent a replacement but one of the replacements was also broken. Luckily, I was able to take the single working one from each pair). I'd highly recommend checking your equipment before leaving the office. Overall, I’d recommend Ecuador Eco Adventure, taking note of the points above. I’d also suggest looking at other reviews for the names of the guides that others have given positive reviews for and that you request for them on your climb. Have a fun and safe adventure!

Trekked the six-day acclimatization programme (Illiniza – Carihuairazo – Chimborazo) in November 2023. For context we have done quite a bit of trekking / hiking, globally, different challenges lengths etc, sometimes guided sometimes solo. Positives were that although we did not summit Chimborazo, it ended up being a good itinerary for the objective – we felt suitably acclimatized to these high elevations, nicely challenged, and had new experiences. The pricing was appropriate for the certification of the guides and the duration of experience. The Huasi lodge, and Chimborazo basecamp lodge were both comfortable, and the food and transportation was of decent quality. We met a range of other ambitious and friendly hikers from around the world. The high-camp option was great and highly recommended. There were a few negatives – although on their own they are not major, collectively and in comparison to other guided treks, we feel it is worth mentioning. Firstly, and perhaps the most major one was COMMUNICATION – or complete lack of. Maybe a precursor to the trek was that there was zero pre-trip communication, just a receipt that we had paid. I had to chase to clarify on kit (which wasn’t 100% clear), and for hotel pickups. Thereafter during the entire week, nobody seemed to be in charge and would communicate what was happening next. Some days we would be told to get into a car, dropped off and then nothing further. Half the issue was language barrier – although the website and reviews suggest the company is suitable for non-Spanish speakers, we felt left out of many plans and what was going on. We had no briefings before any of the three hikes. When it came to equipment (boots, crampons etc), it was only thanks to another (German) hiker to translate into Spanish our questions because the wifi was down and we could not translate. Eventually we received our equipment and fitted crampons at midnight before a trek commences – hardly ideal. Some of the equipment is no longer of good quality – it barely made it through treks, and when we finished it just gets returned to the next unlucky hiker rather than repaired. This poor preparation also related to food – at times it was of low quantity given the energy requirement of the treks in question. One or two days we did not receive lunch despite it being advertised – luckily we had our own bars brought with us. Maybe due to the language barrier, but some of the guides lacked compassion or understanding. They seemed rushed – tired, constantly on the go. It was lucky we had some experience – if I was newer, I wouldn’t have felt comfortable with the guides. I want to mention Cristian, who was great, understanding and caring. Also Edwin, who was clearly passionate about what he did and was clearing trying to take care of us and make sure we had not only a great trek but a nice time in Ecuador. My review is torn – much of this company is good and going in the right direction, but some negatives above leave me a little cautious to fully recommend until they address some of these points. I definitely will add that I contacted them privately and they did acknowledge the feedback and I sincerely hope for future climbers that they take onboard the feedback and we see a change in the reviews.

Understand where you are and what you're getting!! I booked a 5 day trip with EEA to summit Cayambe and Chimborazo while a friend and I were in Ecuador. Their prices are very reasonable compared to other third party adventure companies that cater to (wealthier) Americans - however - this means that you don't get the full treatment. If you are okay with this then EEA is a great company. For summiting volcanoes - you must be in excellent physical shape and you must either give yourself plenty of time to acclimatize or know your physical reaction to altitude and plan accordingly. My partner and I were fairly familiar with our personal reaction to altitudes and only had 2 days to acclimatize from sea level before summiting Cayambe (19,000 ft). This is reckless for most people but we knew our limitations. Two days later, we summited Chimborazo (20,500 ft). This was a very aggressive timeline but was made possible by our physical condition and extremely fortunate weather windows. The guides that EEA books all work freelance in Ecuador. More than likely if you book multiple mountains you will not get the same guide!! This isn't a bad thing just something to be aware of. The guides are also just principally responsible for getting you up the mountain. Wlady is the "travel agent" so-to-speak and is the actual brains behind the operation. Depending on what mountains you do and when you may stay with one of the guides, you may stay with other people doing the same mountain with the same company or you may stay alone in a hostel prior to meeting with your guide. The biggest downfall of this trip was COMMUNICATION. Wlady is good at coordinating everything but I essentially received zero information about where/when we were going places, who we'd be with, where/when we would be eating, how long we would be staying there and what the timelines for the mountains would be without ASKING for it. From an American perspective it is very hard to just trust the process in a foreign country where you know nothing about the area and aren't sure where you are staying and what/when you'll be eating that day. Communication could be improved massively. To Wlady's credit, he always responded in a generally timely manner it's just the insecurity of travel/accommodation/meal plans that made it feel like we were in the dark for much of the trip except the hours that we were actually climbing the mountains. Overall a great experience and we got to see a lot of the country that we wouldn't otherwise have gotten to see if we had just stayed and been tourists in Quito. An amazing country with some amazing, beautiful and sacred mountains.

I had a really great experience with EEA. I was in Ecuador for a conference, and thought that it would be a great idea to climb the tallest mountain in Ecuador. So after more than 40 emails back and forth, I paid my deposit at the very last minute, but Wlady was able to make all arrangements for me. Throughout the process, Wlady always answered my questions promptly. Wlady is a really nice guy, very easy to get along with, and he speaks English really well (which was helpful since I don't speak Spanish, and no one else speaks English!). My guide, Telmo, couldn't speak English fluently, but he definitely spoke it well enough to communicate clearly. He was very friendly and took care of me very well- I couldn't have asked for a better guide. Unfortunately, I didn't make it to the summit, in fact, I didn't make it anywhere close (only about a quarter). I was suffering from terrible AMS the evening before, it hit right before we were supposed to sleep and I wasn't able to sleep during the 4 hours of sleep we were supposed to have before the climb. My head was pounding constantly and my resting heartbeat was insane. In fact, even a day later after descending, I still have a slight headache. During my attempt, I was constantly stopping to rest, and there were even multiple occasions (4 or 5) where I just sat down and fell asleep for a couple of minutes (strange, since I couldn't sleep earlier in the refuge). Eventually, even though I kept on asking Telmo to let me continue, eventually he recommended that we stop and descend. The climb itself isn't challenging, anyone with relatively good fitness levels would be able to make it. It's a matter of endurance and acclimatisation. The real issue for me was acclimatisation. I didn't have pills for AMS (which I have used before and feel they are somewhat effective), and the one night I spent trying to acclimatise was obviously not enough. Wlady had obviously warned me of this before, but my timing didn't make it possible for me to spend more time for acclimatization. If you do decide to do this climb, and it's your first time climbing over 4000m, please do ensure that you acclimatise properly! Below is a breakdown of my trip, Wlady made arrangements for all aspects of the trip: 1. Shuttle from Quito-Riobamba 2. Arrive at EEA in Riobamba, try on gear (everything is provided, you literally only need clothes and a small pack around 20L-30L). Because I was at a conference, I had all my business stuff with me and I was able to store it at the EEA house. 3. Spend a night at a lodge (around 3900m up) to acclimatise- Wlady drove me to a lodge, got to pick up some snacks and water on the way. At the lodge, meals are provided. The morning I was there, I attempted to acclimatise by trekking and running, but obviously it wasn't enough for me. 4. Head to Chimborazo- Wlady and Telmo picked me up from the lodge and we headed to Carrel Refuge, 4800m up on Chimborazo (Whymper refuge- 5000m- is currently closed for renovations). 5. Dinner- Telmo cooked dinner for me 6. Sleep- from 6pm-10pm 7. Climb- there's some food provided before the climb and snacks and drinks for the climb are provided, the climb takes approximately 10 hours (My attempt only lasted 3-4 hours) 8. Return to Riobamba- Wlady picked us up the next morning and drove us back to EEA, we arrived EEA around 12pm, and my shuttle was at 8pm, so Wlady let me clean up and take a nap in one of the available rooms (no extra charge). 9. Shuttle back to Quito- The shuttle picked me up directly from EEA. If you're ever planning on doing anything adventure-related in Ecuador, I definitely recommend EEA. Great service and affordable prices. I will be back one day to conquer this mountain!
I booked Chimborazo climb with them and I got a freelance guide. He was good but I could book it straight with him and save almost 200 dollars. The equipment was also good but the service getting equipment was very bad. The girl that supposed to give me the equipment didn’t know anything about the climb, she at first gave me sleeping 15 degrees above what I was eventually taking, two left hand gloves and in general didn’t know what I really needed for the climb so I had to really make sure myself I get proper equipment. The owner eventually came and help me.

Thanks for the trip to Chimborazo. We had basically a successful trip. One of three persons reached the Chimborazo summit. What could be improved: 1. The Ecoadventure gears. Only one of us found the boots matching his feet. Other right sizes were broken / got broken from laces when trying on. 2. Guide was complaining about slipping on ice. Well the crampons were old and not sharpened. 3. Some gaiters got broken during trial in the shop. 4. Trip planning. We were asked to come to office for gear check too late. The mess with gear ended up in a hurry as the refuge was closing 2pm. There was noone at the office to tell about the next steps. This resulted to following: 5. no time for lunch. 6. No time to buy water for the trip. 7. Sleeping bags (low quality and small) were left at office although needed after all at refuge. Company driver needed to drive two times. 8. Our moving with our rental car to refuge needed to be done by heavy excess speeding. This could have lead to accident or rental car damage due to bad Road. 9. Office worker's attitude. The office worker was offering us broken gear. 10. The mountain guides had a limited interest to bring us forward. For them seemed to be best when people don't climb up. Guide complained to the summiting person that speed was too slow. Guide was speeding like up. On top there was longer break to wait for sun. Our person was first on top. Guide also complained all the time about rope tension and small mistakes. Feeling was that guide was looking for excuses to complain and possibility to cancel further accend. I understand if the guide is also anxious about the high mountain but the way of dealing things was not good. The promised English speaking skills were also very small at the summiting guide. After all trip was safe but I can only recommend the trip to Chimborazo with Ecoadventure when you have your own gear, good own acclimatization and a climb on Illiniza Norte for instance behind you.

The three of us had booked an ascent of Chimborazo with two guides. Unfortunately, we did not reach the summit due to several factors. Here is my assessment. About the agency: Wlady initially answered our questions well, but there was no concrete description of the promotion path so that we could easily assess whether the money was being invested sensibly. Overall, we had the impression that the customer's money was more important than a realistic assessment of the situation and a successful climb. Wlady promised only English-speaking guides and a walkie-talkie connection for communication on the mountain between the guides. Neither was the case. About the equipment: The shoes were surprisingly good, but the clothing wasn't warm enough. The gaiters were half broken. The headlamp we rented was a bad joke (empty batteries and underpowered). No hiking poles were provided, but they would have been very helpful. Guides: - Christian: spoke good English, answered questions proactively and fulfilled his role as a guide professionally. My wife felt very well accompanied. - José: couldn't speak English, barely spoke to us and gave the impression that he had no interest in the climb. I found it irritating that my friend and I were treated unequally as we descended.

I booked the Cotopaxi and Chimborazo climb with Ecuador Eco Adventure. Overall, okay experience, though it could be better. The weather was somehow unpredictable so we tried Cotopaxi twice and ruled out Chimborazo. During the booking process and under the undesired weather condition, the communication was not entirely prompt and clear but no big deal. What really upset me was - I'd never image my guide was yelling at me on the Cotopaxi slope: "You take breaks every 5 steps", "See this guy, he started at 1am and he is here with you". That was 3am and I was lucky enough to swap guides with a group member and with the help of the new guide I did make it to the summit before 7am and return to the refuge before 10am. However, to be honest, the whole experience just changed from 3am and after. People have different climbing philosophies - the journey to the summit is way more important to me than reaching the summit itself. And I was clearly aware of the safety measurements - reach the summit before 7am and return to refuge before 10am so I guess I didn't deserve to be treated in this way. In reflection, if thinking from a positive perspective, probably my original guide had high expectation on me, as I was not completely new to climbing. But I did see myself as a newbie this time as it has been years since the last time I was on a mountain and my body was also recovering. Anyways, was thinking I'd return to do Chimborazo but after this experience I'm sure I won't.

We were a group of 4 friends attempting Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. After checking itineraries and prices for this kind of trip offered by Western guiding companies (IMG, MM, AA) we decided that we can do acclimatization hikes ourselves, and only hire local guides (from Ecuador Eco Adventure) for the mountaineering part of the trip. Of course the mountains themselves were stunning and we are all very happy with the trip. However the organization and logistics (what we paid Ecuador Eco Adventure for), it was a mixed bag, and I would rate it 3 out of 5. Some aspects were truly amazing (6 out of 5 I would say), other aspects were bad and simply unprofessional. I would still recommend EEA to a friend, but with a good amount of warnings and caveats. If you are going with local guides, be prepared for sudden (and sometimes unpleasant) surprises! The good: - Flexibility. Wladi was happy to accommodate our non-standard itinerary. One person left after Cotopaxi and another one joined us just for Chimborazo. And then we decided to take an additional guide at the last moment. - Responsiveness. I was texting and calling Wladi throughout the trip, and he was always available, patiently and politely answering our questions or giving recommendations. - Food, lodging, transportation. Once we left Quito, we thought we left comfort behind. But the lodging (and food) provided by Wladi was just amazing. The Chakana camping lodge near Chimborazo is a true gem (review picture is actually the view from our room there). The hotel in Riobamba was quite nice, too. The rest of the lodging (Jose Rivas refuge at Cotopaxi, high camp at Chimborazo) were quite nice as well but not specific to Ecuador Eco Adventures, they are used by other guides as well. Food provided by Wladi was good throughout the trip, and my vegetarian friends were happy with non-meat options provided at every stop. Wladi even provided snacks and Powerade for the summit days - nice touch. Also worth mentioning that all transfers were on time and we never had any issues with them. - Guides. They spoke very good English and overall were quite good. Lead guide's mood strangely changed after Cotopaxi, and he was consistently discouraging us on Chimborazo (which we summited anyway). Other guides were real troopers. The bad: - Lack of detailed itinerary. Where exactly are we staying (name of the hotel)? What time are we being picked up by the driver? Is transfer from A to B provided and do we need to pay the driver? These are the kinds of questions that I was asking Wladi every day. Since we are not the first or the last clients on this kind of trip, I was surprised that we had to confirm these details each day. A simple text with detailed daily breakdown of the itinerary would have been better than texting. The ugly (unprofessional and really disappointing): - Gear and clothes. Simply bring your own or find a good shop in Quito that will rent it to you for the duration of the trip. Do not use Wladi's gear. Ignore their recommendations about gear selection - what is useful and what is not - they are too optimistic. Do your own research. Wladi's gear was ranging from brand new (I got lucky with a jacket) to decrepit. My friend's double boots literally fell apart as she was tying them. They had to be replaced. Wladi did not have the right sized boot for my friend and we spent some time sitting at the Cotopaxi parking lot waiting for them to drive away and get the right size. When I started fitting crampons to my boot the lead guide told me to stop and not waste time. Good thing that I ignored him - the crampons were too small for the boot. They had to switch them for another pair which worked well for Cotopaxi. However after Cotopaxi they switched them again for some reason, and nobody cared to try the new crampons on my boot! The crampons did not fit and kept falling off on Chimborazo. I had to stop 4-5 times during the climb, sitting on snow waiting for the guide to fix the crampons with ropes and duct tape. Trust me, you don't want to be sitting still for 20 minutes in the wind on 6000m listening to your guide swearing in Spanish. And all that was required was to simply fit the new crampons on the boot - a two minute affair. Very unprofessional. Another gear issue was regarding warm gloves and parkas. Wladi repeatedly told us these clothes are not needed for the climb because it is not too cold. NOT TRUE. If you are moving continuously, you will be warm, but if there is an unexpected stop (like crampons falling off), you will be freezing. Parkas are needed for contingencies or bad weather (we had both). I was literally shaking with cold and lost a lot of energy this way. It could have been much worse of course. The lead guide told me that I don't even need hardshell pants and my softshell OR Cirque will be enought. Too bad I listened to this "advice" - of course softshell was not enough. So do your own research, look up gear lists provided by Western guides and compare to the list provided by Wladi. You will find a few differences :) - Safety and self-arrest training. There was no training provided, period. We were given ice axes but nobody except me ever saw one before. When one of my friends fell on Cotopaxi and started slipping towards a crevasse, he tried to stop himself with his crampons - perfect way to injure one's knee. Before the climb I repeatedly asked Wladi and the guides to give us some self-arrest training but they refused saying the glacier is "too far". That's just not true - on the summit day we walked up to the glacier in less than 1 hour. Maybe that's just me, but I believe that if we are given ice axes, we have to know how to use them. There are multiple long and steep traverses on Cotopaxi and going there without self-arrest knowledge is just unsafe. If a 200+ lbs man like me starts falling down, will a guide be quick and strong enough to catch me? I am not sure. Thank you for reading this long review to the end, friend. I hope you have a fun and safe trip in Ecuador!

I recently completed my Ecuador Ecoadventure and I must say, I was thoroughly disappointed with my experience. While there were a few positive aspects, the numerous negative aspects I encountered during my trip have led me to strongly advise against using this service and discourage anyone else from doing so as well. First, let me start with the positives. The drivers were punctual for pickups and drop-offs, and the guides we had on Chimborazo were fairly experienced and thorough. I did feel confident in their skill set, and our accommodation at base camp was better than expected. We had a single dome with one bed that was large enough for two people in sleeping bags, and there was a shower with hot water (although flip-flops were necessary). The tent was damaged from UV exposure, making it very brittle, but our guide was able to patch up a hole with some duct tape. The altitude acclimatization schedule was well-planned, with hikes up to around 16,000 feet on two separate days and a rest day prior to the summit attempt. However, despite these positives, there were several glaring issues that left me with an overall negative impression of this service. The information provided about the treks was nearly non-existent, and each of our guides gave us conflicting information about routes and what to expect. One of our guides also acted as our host and cook at base camp, and we were fed very little and poor-quality food. We were provided with only about 1,400 calories a day, which was not sufficient for the energy output required for these strenuous hikes. After our overnight hike of Carihuarazo, we returned to camp at 10am and were given only two eggs and toast for breakfast. We woke up a few hours later, only to be told that lunch was not planned because most people just sleep until dinner. They eventually accommodated us with just one egg and rice for lunch. The only time we consumed an adequate amount of calories was at the high camp, which had its own staff and had nothing to do with Eco camp. During the climb up Chimborazo, our guides gave no guidance on when was a safe spot to stop for a break/eat, instead pushing us forward. When we asked about our location in relation to the steep sections we knew we would encounter, we were given inaccurate information. We eventually turned around due to the conditions and our perception of where we were on the trail, only to find out later that we were actually past the first steep part and that the incline was much less from this point on until the next and final wall. After we returned, our guides told us they were picking up another round of clients to go up the mountain that afternoon, which made it clear that they had no real interest in whether or not we summited. It was evident that they just wanted to grind us until we decided to turn around, which was better for them since they could get some more sleep/rest before grinding the next clients. Furthermore, the company's supply of equipment was questionable. They had no real hardshell or insulated jacket to rent to a lady who needed them, and when I asked for three extra AAA batteries, they gave me three mismatched batteries with less than 20% charge left on them. This is highly irresponsible of a company, as they could have simply said they didn't have the batteries instead of giving me used ones. All in all, if you're serious about a summit attempt and a positive experience, I strongly recommend staying away from this company. The lack of information, poor communication, and inadequate food and equipment supply, coupled with the guides' apathy towards our success, made for a highly disappointing experience. Save yourself the trouble and travel with US guides instead.

I worked with Wlady a month out to come up with an itinerary to suit our small group's adventure desires...he gave us a proposed itinerary but was unclear what was included and the transportation costs; he also gave me the run-around with pay-pal deposits and then demanded onsite cash payment in full upon arrival to his home office in Riobamba (we were not prepared for cash paid in full upon arrival). Ultimately there were several miscommunications with Wlady in the booking process. During our trip Wlady was late picking us up at one Refugio and then at another Refugio our small group was nearly kicked out bc Wlady had not made proper/prior arrangements for us to stay there in advance (very embarrassing for us). Furthermore, our Chimborazo guide did not speak any English, which posed a safety hazard with our English speaking group and the current conditions of Chimborazo during our climb. At the end of our trip Wlady told us he would pick us up at the Carrel Refugio then return us to his house where he kept our passports before we departed back to Quito for our return flight home. He did not pick us up...he sent a taxi cab driver to pick us up and then drive us to his house to meet his wife to give us our passports back (shady). During our adventure we spoke with other tourists/climbers who booked through other agencies both in Riobamba and Quito. All in all, I made a mistake by not fully researching my options in advance. For our next Equador climbing trip I will NOT book with a low cost/mom & pops agency such as Ecuador Eco Adventure and I will confirm we have an English speaking guide before ascending a volcanic mountain....lesson learned.

Unfortunately I am not able to recommend Ecuador Eco Adventures. Considering that the price is above the norm I was expecting a well run trip. This was not the case. Organisation and communication were bad. For the price I was expecting to feel like everything was taken care of, but instead I was worrying throughout the trip about logistics. Below a few examples to highlight this: - Due to disorganised pick-up from Quito I arrived in Riobamba late. There was no more time to go the the Ecuador Eco Adventures office to try out and select gear. A gear selection was made for me, but this is not OK as I was deprived from the opportunity to view the available gear, try different things and make a selection myself. On top of that the trip started on a rushed and stressed manner. - I booked to do Chimborazo, sleeping at ‘high camp’. High camp was a very important factor me when booking as it means two hours shorter summit attempt and an additional evening acclimatising at 5300m. It turns out that the high camp was fully booked so we werent able to stay there. Wlady knew this 2-3 WEEKS IN ADVANCE. However he did not proactively tell us this as he was hoping that some people would cancel. We only found out the day before our summit attempt. We should have been informed AS SOON as it became clear that high camp may not be a possibility (2-3 weeks before the start of the trip). This would have allowed for time to change the date so that high camp would be available. Wlady of course refunded the fee for high camp, but this was not about the money. - There were not enough guides booked for our group. Our group noticed during the briefing a few hours before our summit attempt that we were lacking one guide. A few people (including myself) had booked the more expensive ‘private tour’ meaning that you are alone with a guide, but they were going to group us together. It is only cause we mentioned this that they realised a mistake had been made, they had no idea we were missing a guide. They managed to find a last minute guide, who was in fact the chef at the refuge. This was dumb luck that he was available a couple of hours before our summit attempt. Things could have turned out differently. - There was no lunch provided on the first two days, despite the information document stating that meals (including lunch) were included. It’s fine if you aren’t going to include some meals (although I would expect all meals at these prices), however if some meals aren’t included this information needs to be communicated clearly. Also, there is nowhere in the vicinity of base camp where you can actually buy lunch. So this resulted in two days of very low calorie intake prior to a Chimborazo summit attempt. A final point. If you are going to book the Chimborazo summit with ‘glacier school’, don’t bother. ‘Glacier school’ was just a hike up to base camp and back. But there was pretty much zero teaching involved. Literally all that was explained were the two walking techniques using crampons. But they didn’t check to see if we were doing that right. There was NO explanation about self arresting, use of different ropes/knots, glacier crevasses (how to identify and navigate them), avalanche risk, climbing with the ice axe, etc etc. When I asked about self arresting the guide simply said ‘I’ll catch you’, and when I asked how I should self arrest if he (or we both) fall he simply stated ‘the guides don’t fall’. So unfortunately there were many aspects that disappointed me about the Ecuador Eco Adventures. Thankfully my guide on the summit attempt was great and professional. But for your information the guides are freelance and can also be booked directly without the involvement of an agency, which is what I will be doing for my next attempt (unfortunately we couldn’t summit due to avelanche risk on the glacier).

Please read this review to save your money. Mine has been wasted already, but it’s not too late for you. My girlfriend and I paid 890 dollars each to do the Chimborazo cotopaxi package, and throughout the five day excursion we were faced constant reminders of how wasted our money was. In short, save your hard earned money and don’t be swindled by this company. And here is the long version of why: First off, the gear is in horrible condition. You might be lucky and get something new, but I was given gaiters that had broken zippers and my girlfriend was given “waterproof” gloves with holes. At the cotopaxi lodge we were able to see how nice of gear you get from pretty much all the other outfitters. Second, after finishing our climb of cotopaxi we were rushed from the lodge, driven an hour and a half out of the park, then made to sit on the side of the highway for two hours while we waited for another group climbing a different mountain without food or water. When we asked for some, we were turned down, then I showed my frustration and we were allowed to go to the store where I was made to pay for the water. I understand wanting to carpool shuttle rides, but paying the price we paid, waiting by the side of the highway (literally) for two hours is absurd. Third, “Riobamba Basecamp” is an uncleaned, roach and ant infested room in the owner of the companies backyard (stains on the sheets are included). They don’t have food, water, or a space to hangout. We were not given a key, and locked in the compound for hours. When I contacted Wlad he told me it would be ten minutes for someone to get us a key. It took another thirty (after it had been three hours of us waiting patiently). I have never been locked in a hotel or hostel in my life. Fourth, while we were locked in I texted Wlad confirming that we would receive breakfast and dinner the next day (day 3), and he confirmed that yes we would. The next day at 11:30 I asked about breakfast and he said we wouldn’t get breakfast ( even though our itinerary said we would) so we had to stop as a gas station for ramen and cookies (which he made us pay for ourselves). Fifth, unfortunately our Chimborazo climb was not possible because of bad weather (this is nobodies fault), but the company’s reaction was disappointing. They took us back to Riobamba basecamp, let us into a room (again infested with bugs with poopy toilet paper overflowing the garbage can) and dirty sheets. Then I asked about dinner and Wlad’s wife was kind enough to set us up for a meal (against company policy) and she told us that they would take care of our ride to Quito the next day instead of breakfast. We were stoked, finally we were being treated right. The next morning I called Wlad about the ride we were promised and he didn’t believe me and said he would check with his wife. In the end, his solution was he would pay our ten dollar bus fare and give us a ride to the bus station (which would have cost us less than 5 dollars). Furthermore, the guides aren’t his employees. He contracts with them. He charges far more than the average rate (by hundreds) and you receive the same guides. Ecuador Eco Adventure is nothing more than an overpriced travel agency, save your time, save your money and just book an accredited guide through your hotel.

I attempted to climb Chimborazo with this company. We were four friends who attempted to climb the mountain and only three of us returned. Our friend fell and died on the mountain. This was solely down to the negligence of the guide who was provided by Ecuador Eco Aventuras. The guide, Santiago Fabian Naveda Gonzales, who had been unpleasant and negligent throughout our experience, unclipped our friend off the rope in difficult conditions before arriving at the summit. Our friend died on the way down. This was completely unavoidable and everyone knows unclipping your client in such circumstances is extraordinarily dangerous. This tragedy could have been avoided had we chosen another company, which chose safe, well trained guides. Reports about what followed in police statements suggested dishonesty and lack of accountability. Please, for your own safety, seek a safe, reliable tour operator, who hire the best guides in Ecuador - not this one.
