Sajama Climber Reviews

I had an outstanding time with Bolivian Mountaineering. They worked with me to create a custom itinerary such that I could work in La Paz during the week and go out to climb on the weekends - Pico Austria, Huyana Potosi, Acotango, and Sajama. They picked me up each weekend from my hotel, and accommodated me on a last minute change one weekend so that I could still do the climb. The guides all spoke good English, shared their personal stories, roped me up for any sketchy sections, and made me feel comfortable the entire time. Pedro in particular was amazing - super strong climber, upbeat guy, and someone that I really enjoyed my time visiting with as we drove and climbed. This is unquestionably the company I would use if I'm able to make it back to Bolivia in the future.
The boss Pedro does this job in the 3rd generation and it shows. From the start everything went totally smoothly. Every question was answered quickly, clearly and in flawless English. I didn't only go to Illimani with them (summiting was unfortunately not possible due to very bad weather) but also to Sajama. The guide and porters were incredibly nice people, tents and other gear were fine and most important of all I felt perfectly safe all the time. To top it of all of this was done at half the price that some other operators asked for. Whether you're a beginner or an highly experienced mountaineer, Bolivian mountaineering is the team you want to climb with.
2 friends and I completed the classic summits of Bolivia trip with Bolivian Mountaineering. 6 summits in 18 days,a very ambitious program. What a great company. Good communication, great experience and the staff were second to none. We started our trip with a cultural tour of Tiwanaku and lake Titicaca, part of the acclimatisation process. Mabel our guide was a wealth of knowledge. A boat trip to sun and moon island was one of the highlights. We then headed to the mountains, the Condorirri. Pico Austria was the first peak and ticked off by all three of us. Pequeno Alpamayo was second with my 2 friends successfully summiting. We then moved on to Huayna Potosi which I successfully summited. Illness was taking its toll but the small group nature of this trip and having 2 guides maximised our success. We then enjoyed some well earned rest in La Paz before heading to Illimani. Again because Bolivian mountaineering is so flexible one of our group was only participating in the first 12 days and 4 peaks. After Illimani we headed off to Sajama National park. The original plan was Parinacota and Sajama, however we altered this and climbed Parinacota and Acotango instead. As a group we didnt all summit every peak but as a group we put at least one person on every summit, my friend and I both climbed 4 peaks, 4 of which were over 6000 metres. A very successful trip. This trip felt so easy as the logistics, the flexibility and organisation were all handled so well. There are probably cheaper options but who wants to be tied into a rope with 5 total strangers where if one of the 5 gets sick all 5 have to descend. this was a great value for money trip that was tailored to our needs and maximised our success. Would definately use these guys again if I was to return to Bolivia.
I made a custom itinerary with Pedro and was not disappointed when the time came. I found the company very professional and also warm and accommodating. I planned on climbing 4 peaks. Successfully climbed 3 and decided to take it easier in Sajama and experience the park. I had the best time. My guide Elio was excellent. Very talented and skilled mountaineer. He was also so kind and attentive. It was the best climbing with him and is probably why I was able to Summit Pequeno Alpamayo, Huayana Potosi and Illiamni in just over a week! Highly recommend this company and the mountains of Bolivia!
I did 4 climbs (so far) with Pedro and Elio including Sajama and everything was organized very well and the climbing experience was great! Don't hesitate to stop by the office and discuss your options - Pedro can easily come up with a personalized itinerary based on your interests.
Put briefly, don’t hesitate to book with Pedro. Amazing guide (friendly, safe, conscientious, and knowledgeable). By far the best I saw in Bolivia. Amazing climbs. Beautiful country. I couldn’t have asked for a better first experience climbing outside the United States. Pedro always goes above and beyond and is one of the nicest guides I’ve ever climbed with. He is very safe without making you feel like you’re being babied or pulled up the mountain. He always has hot food and drinks available. And he’s constantly checking to make sure you’re comfortable. I got a small stomach bug early in my trip and he completely changed the food menus to accommodate me, which got me back to full speed in no time. I saw plenty of parties climbing with other guides, and Pedro clearly had the best gear, was the most attentive, and cared the most for his client. He even took the time to drive me to the airport at 2am the day I left, despite having a full schedule of acclimatization hikes the next day. He also takes a ton of photos, which I really appreciated. I hiked/climbed 5 peaks with Pedro: Pico Austria, Charquini Peak, Huayna Potosi, Illimani, and Sajama. The schedule he put together was perfect, giving me plenty of time to acclimatize and rest but not wasting any of my days there. All of the climbs were rewarding and different in their own ways. I highly recommend a trip with all of those climbs. If I were to add any others, I think Parinacota might be cool to pair with Sajama (if you like volcanos). Otherwise, peaks like Ancohuma and Illampu would give you a great view of the Cordillera Real. Bolivia is also a great place to travel. It’s certainly a poor country, but everyone is very friendly, the countryside has unparalleled beauty, and the mountains are stunning. Again, don’t hesitate to book with Pedro. You will have no regrets.
Pedro is easily one of the best mountain guides in the world. He was also part of a group that helped guide Malia Obama when she visited Bolivia, so that alone should indicate the caliber of guide he is. My wife and I spent months traveling around South America and our 7 day trip to climb Sajama was the highlight of our vacation. We were nervous about climbing a 6500 meter mountain with limited experience but Pedro was extremely organized, knowledgeable, calming, and compassionate. Pedro is also one of a handful of mountaineering guides in the entire country who fluently speaks English. We planned our trip about 6 months out and Pedro promptly answered all emails. Once we arrived the trip was very well organized and professional. In Sajama, we stayed at a small charming Inn run by Mario and his family. Besides helping run the hotel, Mario is another guide who is always smiling, very friendly, and has maybe guided or climbed Parincota (6380 meters) as well as Pomerape (6282 meters) more than anyone else. Pedro can help book trips through Mario if an English speaking guide is not needed. We climbed Acotango (6052 meters) the second day and Sajama over the next 3 days. Both peaks are incredible. On Sajama, Pedro made excellent food at basecamp as well as at the high camp. Pedro is an exceptional judge at finding the safest routes as well as establishing the correct pace which is essential when exercising for 12-16 hours over a 24 hour period, especially at high elevation. Pedro is also very good at supplying just the right snacks, taking breaks at the right time, and snapping fantastic photos. The trip was a trip of a lifetime and we were extremely happy with the service we received. The cost of the trip was very reasonable and would have been a value even if we had paid substantially more. I doubt you could find a better guide in Bolivia at any price. Without such an incredible guide, I think it is unlikely we would have summited Sajama. Pedro was not only our guide but also became our friend and we look forward to staying in touch. Thank You
Can recommend Bolivian Mountaineering to the warmest! Had a fantastic trip to Bolivia in June 2015. With starting points in La Paz. Conducted several trips like cycling down the Death road, climbing glaciers, The top of Sajama, Chacaltaya and Acotango. Pedro is an exelent guide with good mood, experience, and a lot of knowledge.
I spent 3 weeks climbing with Pedro in 2017. It was my first time mountaineering, and I was pretty apprehensive. I contacted Pedro at relatively short notice (a month), asked for an itinerary, and after a week of back-and-forth emails/whatsapp messages we had come up with an exciting and achievable plan. The company sells itself on great service and that is absolutely what I got. From the start everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. During the trip I kept changing the schedule/itinerary every few days (I gained confidence and wanted to do more, and harder, peaks) - Pedro always accommodated me and didn’t make me feel like a nuisance. Him and his team really went out of their way to make sure I had the best experience I possibly could. Pedro is an excellent technical mountaineer (look him up on youtube!) and only uses guides that meet his high standards for ability/safety. The company uses top of the range equipment. I always felt safe and had total confidence in Pedro’s ability. Towards the end of the trip I became sick (giardia) at Sajama’s base camp. Pedro was amazing: he looked after me like I was family and nursed me back to health (buying new food for me etc.). A few days later I was back to full strength and we ended the trip in by climbing Huayna Potosi’s French route. I couldn’t have done it without him. We ended up summiting 10 peaks over 3 weeks. By the end of the trip we had gone from guide/client to true friends. I will be going back and climbing with Pedro (in Peru, Chile, Argentina) in years to come. I cannot recommend this company enough!!
Bolivian Mountaineering is nothing less than an example of professionalism and dedication to one's job and passion. During the first two weeks of October I had a climbing trip to Pequeno Alpamayo, Sajama, Illampu and Huayna Potosi (French direct). Having chosen BM was the first steep towards a succesful expedition. I cannot stress enough the level of knowledge that Pedro has about mountaineering and his friendliness as a person. It is difficult to find climbing agencies that will take your goals as seriously as you do but BM goes that extra mile on whatever is under their control to make you stand on top of those peaks. We came a cross multiple difficulties during our trip due to weather but Pedro was quick and smart in coming up with an alternative while still preserving the main objetives of my expedition. For those serious about climbing or who are just starting I promise you BM is the place the go for a fun and safe experience. (Plus you are going to learn a heck of a lot about climbing and Bolivia in general)

I spoke with William on the phone before my arrive to La Paz, he was patient and explained everything to me. When I arrived, he welcomed me like a member of his family and we spoke about my plans to climb 4 summits of 6000m. We started with 1 day of ice climbing in Huayna Potosi with Javier the guide. Javier was amazingly professional and patient and took the time to explain the technical part. I continued to climb with Javier illimani and he stopped me before I hit the ground when I fell face first. After illimani we continued to climb the French route in Huayana Potosi and after that we went to climb Pomerape. We also tried to climb Sajama and Illampu but the conditions were very bad so we had to go back. Javier is an amazing guide and extremely professional I highly recommend him and The agency of William! They make you feel like family and they will always take care of you!!

We visited Bolivia for the third time and therefore we knew which agency to choose. We had very good experience with Inca Land Tours in organizing private tours (2 persons) from the past. This time, we asked them to prepare the itinerary for 12 days that would prepare me for climbing the highest peak in Bolivia - Nevado Sajama (6.542 m). Therefore, the proposed itinerary should reflect the gradual acclimatization. First, we had 3-day hiking in Isla del Sol (Titicaca) and then I climbed three mountains in succession - Pico de Charquini (5.392 m), Huayna Potosí (6.088 m) and Nevado Sajama (6.542 m). The success was mainly supported by superb mountain guide Ramiro who has many years' experience in climbing South America peaks and is really competent guide. Without his great support, I cannot imagine to tackle Nevado Sajama, which is really a challenging climb. As for the hiking on Isla del Sol, William was the guide who accompanied us. Again - perfect choice for our purposes. William is very friendly, cheerful and knowledgeable person about the visited area. In summary, Inca Land Tours (ILT) is the perfect tour operator for people who have rough idea what they want to do and ILT can provide the quality service to reach their expectations. The guides, Ramiro and William, are among the best we have met so far during our travels.

We did a three day Sajama Nationalpark tour including a climb of Parinacota Mountain with them. The tour was very good organised and our Guide Ramiro was amazing, and super friendly he took a lot of care of us at the Mountain and took also some great Photos. The tour was like agreed beforehand in the office and included everything they promised although we booked only one day in advance. All together some of the best days we had in Bolivia.
