Huayna Potosi Climber Reviews

I went on a 15-day expedition with Bolivian Mountaineering back in June 2023. We successfully summited Pico Austria, Pequeno Alpamayo, Huanya Potosi, Illimani, Parinacota, and finally Condoriri / Cabeza de Condor. Pedro was great to work with while planning for the trip and great to meet in person when I arrived in La Paz. We made some adjustments to my itinerary based on condition reports that Pedro had heard from the prior week or so of my arrival. My guide, Jose, was awesome! I had a bit of mountaineering rust to shake off (it had been a few years since I climbed a glaciated peak), and I think it showed on Pequeno Alpamayo. But Jose helped me through that and I could tell his confidence in me grew throughout the trip. The trip culminated with a successful summit of Cabeza de Condor which was definitely on the edge of my comfort zone, but was absolutely amazing. I also want to shout out Pepe who was a great cook in Condoriri and Huayna Potosi. Overall I was very happy with Bolivian Mountaineering. Since that trip I've definitely looked back at photos wanting to be back in the Cordillera Real. Contemplating going back in a couple years to climb some of the other peaks in that range, and maybe tackle harder routes on a couple of the mountains we climbed this last trip. And if I end up doing that, I'll definitely be going with Bolivian Mountaineering again.
I have done 4 different trips, 8 days total with Bolivian Mountaineering. I reached the summits of all my climbs with them: Huayna Potosi, Charquini, Pico Austria, Pico Tarija. I cannot praise the owner Pedro and his team of guides, cooks and porters enough. From the very beginning Pedro was professional and very communicative. He answered all my questions with precise detail and addressed all of my concerns with patience. He provided fair pricing and transparency throughout (honestly for the quality of service you are getting, his company is THE BEST value even though some have said it is pricier than others --- I do not look so closely at price when my safety and well being is involved). He has a very good relationship with all the workers and refuge managers. As a guide, Pedro has SO MUCH experience and knowledge - I felt extremely safe in his care. He was also very observant of my needs, he went above and beyond to ensure my success to the summit! He tailored my whole 8 day program to my goals AND to my day to day well-being (so important at high altitude). I also had another very experienced guide Jose M. who was also amazing. He was very attentive to all my needs, he knew exactly when to encourage me and when to give me a helping hand without me saying anything, and most importantly made me feel safe at all times. When I became sick during my 1st trip, both Pedro and Jose took very good care of me, which gave me significant confidence and trust in Bolivian Mountaineering so I ended booking three more trips with them. I would also like to mention the cook and porter Pepe/Jose who was very attentive and friendly as well as the sister cooks at Huayna Potosi, including Eli who made delicious food with love. I did not meet Pedro's wife, who takes care of a lot of the business administrative work, but when I was having digestive issues she packed homemade lunch boxes for me with such care! Bolivian Mountaineering provides exceptional services for pre-trip planning, guides, porters, cooks, transportation and custom made programs! You will not only have a great climb but a fun and memorable stay with these guys. 5/5 would recommend to friends and family, and when I return to South America I will be reaching out to Pedro again, without hesitation.
2 friends and I completed the classic summits of Bolivia trip with Bolivian Mountaineering. 6 summits in 18 days,a very ambitious program. What a great company. Good communication, great experience and the staff were second to none. We started our trip with a cultural tour of Tiwanaku and lake Titicaca, part of the acclimatisation process. Mabel our guide was a wealth of knowledge. A boat trip to sun and moon island was one of the highlights. We then headed to the mountains, the Condorirri. Pico Austria was the first peak and ticked off by all three of us. Pequeno Alpamayo was second with my 2 friends successfully summiting. We then moved on to Huayna Potosi which I successfully summited. Illness was taking its toll but the small group nature of this trip and having 2 guides maximised our success. We then enjoyed some well earned rest in La Paz before heading to Illimani. Again because Bolivian mountaineering is so flexible one of our group was only participating in the first 12 days and 4 peaks. After Illimani we headed off to Sajama National park. The original plan was Parinacota and Sajama, however we altered this and climbed Parinacota and Acotango instead. As a group we didnt all summit every peak but as a group we put at least one person on every summit, my friend and I both climbed 4 peaks, 4 of which were over 6000 metres. A very successful trip. This trip felt so easy as the logistics, the flexibility and organisation were all handled so well. There are probably cheaper options but who wants to be tied into a rope with 5 total strangers where if one of the 5 gets sick all 5 have to descend. this was a great value for money trip that was tailored to our needs and maximised our success. Would definately use these guys again if I was to return to Bolivia.
Me and my friend were looking for a private guided tour to help us safely climb Huayna Potosi. Pedro's company Bolivian Mountaineering offered exactly that, as he is specialized in guiding smaller or private groups for a more personal experience. When talking to Pedro we loved that he was very helpful in catering to our needs and offering flexibility by adding the Pico Austria summit before our climb to Huayna Potosi. He also recommended adding an extra rest day before the climb to increase our chances of making it and also to avoid larger groups making sure we had calmer experience on the mountain. We appreciated Pedro's patience, humor and encouragements. And of course also his professionalism and experience. Pedro, thanks a lot for introducing the mounting to us and having an awesome time. Until we meet again somewhere in the clouds. Henry & Julien
Can't recommend them enough. Our Huayna Potosi climb with Pedro, José and Pepe was an amazing experience, they were incredibly friendly, helpful and we had a lot of fun. Good equipment and very experienced, if you want to go mountaineering in Bolivia just book with them, you can't go wrong! They also organised our transportation to Pico Austria. We will definitely come back to them for our next adventures in Bolivia!
As an expat living in La Paz, I've developed a great relationship with Pedro and his team over the past two years that I've lived here. Last year, I climbed Pico Austria, Tarija Peak, Pequeno Alpamyo and Illimani with Pedro and Jose, another excellent guide and it was a wonderful experience. This year, I wanted to test my mountaineering skills a bit more, learn some basic techniques, and take it up a notch. Pedro organized a guided trip for us to do some ice climbing to warm up, followed by an ascent up Pequeno Alpamyo's Southeast face - a much more challenging and technical route than the normal route up the summit ridge. Here, I was able to gain confidence and practice climbing up a steep wall, even leading the last part ascending to the summit. The following day we traveled to Huayna Potosi's high camp, and climbed the very direct French Route, up a much longer and steeper wall, finishing it off with a traverse from the south to north summit. Pedro was encouraging, professional, and a calming, comforting presence the whole way up and down. Recently, we completed the trip with a climb up the Cabeza del Condor, one of the most beautiful and imposing mountains in the Cordillera Real. Once again, we scrambled through dirt, snow, rock and ice to make the final ascent to the summit - a spectacular finish to a great season of climbing. Pedro and his entire team are some of the most friendly, positive, professional and competent guides I've ever consulted with. I've been on trekking, rafting and other trips throughout the U.S. and South America, and Bolivian Mountaineering is the best in the business. Pedro makes sure you have everything you need to make a successful summit to just about any mountain, safely, and help you realize your full potential along the way.
Bolivian Mountaineering provided excellent top notch logistical and guiding for Pico Austria & Pequeño Alpamayo including airport pick up, hotel arrangements, refuge stay and all transportation and food for a great price. All in all Bolivian Mountaineering provided expert guidance. I look forward to using them again for future climbs on Huayna Potosi & Illimani
My third expedition with Bolivian Mountaineering to Parinacota was as it has been in the past, a joy. Not only did we manage to reach the summit but also it was a great deal of fun to have Pedro as my guide. He does make it feel like you are on a trip with a friend as supposed to just a guide. Most agencies might just feel comfortable taking you to Huayna Potosi, but once again BM has proven to me as the place to go when it comes to organizing more sophisticated and complex expeditions. I will be more than happy to come back to Bolivia and and climb more with Pedro's agency. PS. This was my 6th summit with BM in Bolivia, so I guess this is the best statement I can give you of how much I trust them.
We spent three days with Pedro and his team, to get to the summit of Huayna Potosi. Their professionalism and commitment to safety immediately stood out to me. I appreciated the pre-hike safety meeting before our tour even started, to make sure that we understood everything involved and had the proper gear. This was important to us, as it was our first mountaineering experience.
Throughout the hike, they went out of their way to make sure that we were motivated and happy as well.
While hiking, the guides would help with everything. When Jose noticed I was tired, he would take my water bottle out of my backpack for me, hand it to my brother, and then put it back. Those small things helped me conserve more energy. He also took amazing pictures of us hiking and at the summit!
This was a truly memorable experience, and we learned so much from Pedro and his team. We would highly recommend Bolivian Mountaineering to anyone— novice or advanced climbers!
We did a 4 day trek with Pedro and his company including Austria Peak, glacier training, acclimatization and the final ascent to Huayna Potosi. It was just incredible. Pedro is an amazing guide, who embodies all a true mountaineer should have. His customers/friends are always his priority. He is a great teacher and great to spend time with. All service was above expectations also during Covid times. If you are planning to climb Huayna Potosi there is no way around Bolivian mountaineering! Enjoy!
I can fully recommend booking Pedro and his agency for everybody wanting to do mountaineering in Bolivia! I climbed Huayna Potosi twice with him and his friend Alex! The first time we had to stop at about 5800m because of severe snow storms and danger of avalanches, but we tried again 6 days later and summited in about 1.5 days with Alex. So I got to see Huayna Potosi in 2 different conditions, an incredible experience! Everything was perfectly organized, also the gear and the food. Pedro is very experienced in the mountains, a good guide and speaks very well English. Even more, he is not only a guide, he became a friend! Thank you for everything Alex and Pedro, and I hope to be back for another tour someday! Silvan (from Switzerland) ps: I went end of March 2019 and not in May (couldn't select March anymore here).
Put briefly, don’t hesitate to book with Pedro. Amazing guide (friendly, safe, conscientious, and knowledgeable). By far the best I saw in Bolivia. Amazing climbs. Beautiful country. I couldn’t have asked for a better first experience climbing outside the United States. Pedro always goes above and beyond and is one of the nicest guides I’ve ever climbed with. He is very safe without making you feel like you’re being babied or pulled up the mountain. He always has hot food and drinks available. And he’s constantly checking to make sure you’re comfortable. I got a small stomach bug early in my trip and he completely changed the food menus to accommodate me, which got me back to full speed in no time. I saw plenty of parties climbing with other guides, and Pedro clearly had the best gear, was the most attentive, and cared the most for his client. He even took the time to drive me to the airport at 2am the day I left, despite having a full schedule of acclimatization hikes the next day. He also takes a ton of photos, which I really appreciated. I hiked/climbed 5 peaks with Pedro: Pico Austria, Charquini Peak, Huayna Potosi, Illimani, and Sajama. The schedule he put together was perfect, giving me plenty of time to acclimatize and rest but not wasting any of my days there. All of the climbs were rewarding and different in their own ways. I highly recommend a trip with all of those climbs. If I were to add any others, I think Parinacota might be cool to pair with Sajama (if you like volcanos). Otherwise, peaks like Ancohuma and Illampu would give you a great view of the Cordillera Real. Bolivia is also a great place to travel. It’s certainly a poor country, but everyone is very friendly, the countryside has unparalleled beauty, and the mountains are stunning. Again, don’t hesitate to book with Pedro. You will have no regrets.
We're heading up Huayna Potosi soon so, even though we'd been up to 5,600 recently, thought we should book in another acclimatization hike beforehand. After a bit of research we found Bolivian Mountaineering and definitely made the right decision in going with them—Pedro was the perfect man for the job. Beyond bringing such a wealth of experience, he was also just such a nice guy, with many stories about life, friends, and family. He's a guy who's got his priorities straight and is living right. The walk itself was from around 4,500m to 5,350m and back, which was the biggest and hardest day hikes we'd done so far in our South America trip. That said, it'd be one of the simplest for BM, and Pedro's advice along the way made it easy. It was probably also the most beautiful, with multiple reveals making for the perfect effort-to-reward ratio. (Soon to be eclipsed by Huayna Potosi, we hope). We hadn't really realised the wealth of hiking and climbing that was available in Bolivia before we got here, and will now have to think about coming back to explore many more hikes (and climbs!) in the future. Looking forward to next time Pedro. If you're ever heading to the US or Aus, let us know ;)
Our five day introduction to mountaineering was incredible and time spent with Pedro and Francisco a privilege. Living at a measly 600m it was a challenge to get a family of varying age, ability and determination to 6088m. Our family holiday was a celebration of my husband’s 50th and I wanted to provide him the opportunity to reconnect with his love of mountains at high altitude that he’d enjoyed prior to our family life. I was however terrified of mountaineering, expensive holidays contingent on weather and altitude sickness in general. I thought the whole adventure was a gamble with the odds (weather, personal ability, lack of fitness and altitude sickness) stacked up so that at least one or more in the family would have a bad experience which in a close-knit unit would negatively taint everyone else’s experience. But we couldn’t deny my husband’s longing to reconnect with/share his love for mountaineering. Pedro is one is the best mountaineering guides Bolivia has available. He literally grew up in the foothills of Huayna Potosi and comes from a mountaineering dynasty which has afforded him the opportunity to lead some elite clientele. Luckily for us (and you too) his humility means that he is happy to work with anyone who has an interest in the mountains not matter their background, ambitions or ability. Pedro’s high caliber blend of knowledge, experience and skill means that he is always weighing up those variables (weather, personal skill/experience etc) I was so worried about and coming up with the most suitable plan for the moment. At our first meeting in La Paz Pedro offered us alternative itineraries to Huayna Potosi. The big issue was forecast snow fall > 0.5 m and the possibility of opening the track. To give us the best experience we pushed the program back a couple of days and agreed that a training program in Condoriri was a suitable alternative. In the meantime he suggested some activities that we’d enjoy but would also assist us acclimatise. When we next met Pedro gave us the option of changing our itinerary again to attempt Huayna Potosi. His intuition/experience and adaptability endeared trust and was the key to our success. Pedro was the perfect guide to lead such a mixed group. He is one of those rare humans who treats everyone equally and with empathy shows them a path within or beyond their abilities. The night we climbed HP from almost the first step I’d decided I wasn’t going to the top but it was ridiculously cold so stopping for a decent rest was worse than pushing forward, many times I considered bowing out but returning downhill in the dark seemed also seemed harder than taking another small, painful step forward. Meanwhile daughter’s hands were particularly cold and although she didn’t complain Pedro stopped us a couple of times to address this. One time Francisco gave her his gloves and the another time Pedro unzipped his jacket so she could warm he hands with his body heat. After some time he asked her if she was warm enough because he was getting cold and we needed to keep moving, at which point she uncharacteristically started crying. She was overwhelmed by the cold, sleeplessness and physical exhaustion but mostly by the compassion of Pedro and Francisco and their selflessness. So tears turned to embarrassed laughter-crying and we pushed on. About 30 meters from the summit I sat down to contentedly view the spectacular sunrise and was more than indifferent to walking any further but roped to my daughter and Pedro I was compelled to keep walking. I am so glad I did - at the top the scenery was another level again - there is a reason reaching the summit is what it’s all about! The whole night Pedro was walking us at a slow pace but at the same time sticking to a schedule. The slow pace meant we had no altitude issues and the careful time management meant reached the summit at dawn. We felt sorry for the other groups that had arrived much earlier and were freezing whilst waiting for the sunrise. They raced off the mountain as soon as the sun was visible on the horizon leaving us to enjoy our extensive views in blissful peace. Francisco and Pedro energetically jigged around taking photos and then with an eye to safety started shepherding us down the mountain. The walk down was much warmer and breathtakingly beautiful than the ascent. I write this in Santiago whilst in transit home and it feels surreal that only yesterday we were on the top of Huayna Potosi. We are already dreaming about our return to experience other adventures with Pedro and Francisco. We are truly thankful for their amazing guidance and friendship and can wholeheartedly recommend their services. PS we speak no Spanish, Pedro’s English is very good.
Where to start with this review? I’ve traveled extensively for my whole life and this is probably the best experience I’ve ever had visiting any of the 30+ countries I’ve been in. Pedro is the most amazing tour guide you could ever hope to have regardless of what type of tour/activity you’re doing, and he is an amazingly skilled mountaineer and teacher on top of that. After our four days together in the mountains, I feel like I have a new lifelong friend that I will hopefully be able to climb with many times in the year to come. The first thing I’ll mention is that, yes, his climbs are slightly more expensive than if you go with one of the more touristy companies that are a dime a dozen on the tourist street, but even if the sole fact that your life may be in your guide’s hands doesn’t make it worth it to you to spend a little more money, there are a million things that should make you choose to climb with Pedro. First, he is super easy to communicate with, by both email and in person before the climb. We met twice in person in the few days before our trip, and it was great to get to know him beforehand and we created a customized itinerary that was perfect for me to learn new mountaineering skills for a few days and climb some lower peaks before climbing Huayna Potosi. You could also set everything up via email, but it was really nice to get personalized face time beforehand. It also made it so that when we climbed Huayna, I was very well prepared and he knew my fitness level and skill set well and so we were able to take a slightly more difficult and fun route (still the “normal route”) than all the other tours, all due to the fact that he had taken the time to get to know me. Pedro also spent most of the time when we were in the rifugios with me, chatting and getting to know one another. Most of the other guides that I saw would cook and prepare the equipment for their clients but then just hang out with the other guides and ignore their clients. I think I could literally tell you the entirety of Pedro’s life story and we shared so many stories and laughs, it was amazing. Though we spoke in Spanish 99% of the time (as I’m close to fluent and wanted to keep practicing), he also speaks English incredibly well if you don’t speak Spanish. All of our equipment was great, and I never had any concerns for my safety during any of the climbs that we did. By the end of the trip we were already planning when I was going to return to Bolivia and climb some of the more difficult peaks in Bolivia and Pedro even offered for me to stay at his house when I come back. I really can’t say enough good things about my experience with this company, and I could keep writing but will just say that if you are looking for not just a box to check off saying that you’ve climbed at 6,000 feet, but want to have an unforgettable experience while also learning a ton of mountain skills, you will not find a better company/guide than this.
Bolivian Mountaineering was recommended to me by a friend, and did not dissapoint! After travelling around Peru and Bolivia for 30 days, I can easily say that climbing Huayna Potosi with Pedro, was the highlight of the trip! I did the 3 day tour together with my girlfriend. Everything was vey well planned and professionally executed! Even though we didn't have any experience, in any form of mountain climbing, Pedro made us feel very confident and safe all the way. Pedro is very knowledgeable and social, we enjoyed his campany very much, as he gladly told about his experiences on the mountains. When I come back to Bolivia one day, I will definitely choose to do another climb with Pedro. Bolivian Mountaineering and Pedro is highly recommended!
I spent 3 weeks climbing with Pedro in 2017. It was my first time mountaineering, and I was pretty apprehensive. I contacted Pedro at relatively short notice (a month), asked for an itinerary, and after a week of back-and-forth emails/whatsapp messages we had come up with an exciting and achievable plan. The company sells itself on great service and that is absolutely what I got. From the start everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. During the trip I kept changing the schedule/itinerary every few days (I gained confidence and wanted to do more, and harder, peaks) - Pedro always accommodated me and didn’t make me feel like a nuisance. Him and his team really went out of their way to make sure I had the best experience I possibly could. Pedro is an excellent technical mountaineer (look him up on youtube!) and only uses guides that meet his high standards for ability/safety. The company uses top of the range equipment. I always felt safe and had total confidence in Pedro’s ability. Towards the end of the trip I became sick (giardia) at Sajama’s base camp. Pedro was amazing: he looked after me like I was family and nursed me back to health (buying new food for me etc.). A few days later I was back to full strength and we ended the trip in by climbing Huayna Potosi’s French route. I couldn’t have done it without him. We ended up summiting 10 peaks over 3 weeks. By the end of the trip we had gone from guide/client to true friends. I will be going back and climbing with Pedro (in Peru, Chile, Argentina) in years to come. I cannot recommend this company enough!!
Huayna Potosi was our (my girlfriend an me) first peak over the magical 6000m line. We were doing some training in the european alps and were looking for a guide for our trip. My girlfriend got a recommendation from a friend and so we went without further planning to Bolivia, La Paz. I have to admit that i was not that happy to travel to Bolivia withouth having a schedule about how and when we would climb Huayna Potosi. But once Pedro arrived at our hostel in time - even some minutes before our arranged meeting time ;-) and gave us a detailed overview of the tour i was sure: This is the guide we were looking for! It was a marvelous 4 days trek/hike/climb with Pedro and his team. Everything was planned perfectly, all team members were friendly and the complete small "expedition" was a success. As my girlfriend had some problems with the altitude a big part was psychology and also this part Pedro managed easily. We started the peak attempt as one of the first groups at night to give us enough time for walking. Several times we had to stop as my girlfriend was feeling cold and with each meter she was getting more tired - altitude sickness. 60m below the summit my girlfriend wanted to give up but Pedro found the right words and reacted in a way that he convinced my girlfriend to go ahead. So finally we arrived the summit - as last group, but we did it! It was a wunderfull unforgettable moment and my girlfriend said: "Without Pedro i would not have made it to the top!" And she is right! Without Pedro we would not have made it to the top. He fully understood our situation and physical condition and was planning everything accordingly. Amazing! Thank you very much for everything!!! But it is not only Pedro's incredible knowledge about mountaineering, it is about Pedro as a wonderfull person, that makes a trip with him so unforgettable. After 4 days we won a friend in Bolivia. Hopefully we se us again in Bolivia for climbing the next mountains or in Germany to guide Pedro through the european alps.
My Huayna Potosi climb with Pedro was one of the highlights of my life! Standing on the summit of a nearly 20,000ft mountain as the sun rose over the beautiful Bolivian landscape is simply incredible and makes the tough climb worth it. It was my first major climb and the Bolivian Mountaineering team was quick to respond to my questions and needs. Pedro was encouraging, fun, knowledgeable, understanding, and kind - we even have stayed in touch over the past few years. Next time I am climb will certainly be with Pedro and Bolivian Mountaineering.
Bolivian Mountaineering is nothing less than an example of professionalism and dedication to one's job and passion. During the first two weeks of October I had a climbing trip to Pequeno Alpamayo, Sajama, Illampu and Huayna Potosi (French direct). Having chosen BM was the first steep towards a succesful expedition. I cannot stress enough the level of knowledge that Pedro has about mountaineering and his friendliness as a person. It is difficult to find climbing agencies that will take your goals as seriously as you do but BM goes that extra mile on whatever is under their control to make you stand on top of those peaks. We came a cross multiple difficulties during our trip due to weather but Pedro was quick and smart in coming up with an alternative while still preserving the main objetives of my expedition. For those serious about climbing or who are just starting I promise you BM is the place the go for a fun and safe experience. (Plus you are going to learn a heck of a lot about climbing and Bolivia in general)
I was assigned to a guide called Siberio to climb Huayna Potosi. Siberio was a great guy and really fun to hang out with. When i lost my wallet in the cab Siberio helped me to get it back. That saved my whole Bolivia trip from being a disaster. Siberio also is a great mountain guide. He knew a lot about the conditions on the mountain, as well as on altitude sickness and how to prevent it, he motivated me when times were tough. We reached the summit and had a blast. I would highly recommend climbing Huayna or any other Bolivian Mountain with Bolivian Mountaineering and Siberio.
We had a great experience with our 3 day tour to the peak of Huayna Potosi. The preliminary discussion was open and informal and you can get all the equipment provided. The food at both camps was good and the ice climbing in preparation for the climb was great fun. Climbing the summit was the crowning achievement and a unique experience. Overall, a very professional tour where we always felt safe and in good hands.

We had an incredible trip to Huayna Potosi with Jiwaki. All of the guides were dedicated to making our trip run smoothly, be on time, be safe and most importantly, be fun! Ivan guided us on the summit climb with patience and expertise. We could tell he knew the mountain well. Our group of approx 14 hikers bonded right away and we were a supportive team throughout the 3 days. We were well fed, had adequate accommodation, gear and training to give us the best chance of reaching the summit. Do take the acclimatization period seriously before starting this trek and do bring or take Diamox (easily purchased at pharmacies all over La Paz) because it can make or break your trip. For someone interested in doing a hard climb up a glacier to a beautiful summit, this is your best bet at achieving it!

A beautiful 7km climb with 850m of elevation gain to find yourself alone in the world at the top of this magnificent peak of the Cordillera Real. The ascent is not too difficult and you have a beautiful view of the surrounding massifs including the Condoriri and the Huayna Potosi.

I climbed Huayna Potosi with Jiwaki, my guide Jose was great and super professional and very kind. The equipment provided by the company is very professional and high quality. The food and accomodation were good too. Even tho it was a though climb the guide kept motivating and helping. I would really recommend booking with Jiwaki! I felt very safe during the entire trip. The office is very professional, well organised and facilitating.

Jiwaki is a top agency with fully professional people, the best way to share the love for mountains in La Paz. I went with them for a 5-days adventure, 3 days Condoriri Trekking and 2 days Climb to Huayna Potosi. I already miss this adventure in the Andes of Bolivia. I found the trekking the perfect acclimatization for the ascent to Huayna. Alone in the nature, lovely mountains and top service from the agency guide! Gato (Reynaldo) is the best mountain guide!

I highly recommend Jiwaki to anyone wanting to climb Huayna Potosi or explore the Cordillera Real. We did a 5 day trip with Jiwaki - starting with 2.5 days in the Cordillera Real including climbing Pico Austria and then straight into the 3 day Huayna Potosi ascent. The days hiking before really helped with our acclimatisation. Jiwaki exceeded our expectations - delicious food, supportive and encouraging guides, excellent equipment. So we’ll organised - the guides really know what they are doing and I always felt safe and confident with them. Overall a fantastic experience. Thank you so much especially to Rudy and Eric for the first few days and to Ivan for getting me to the summit even though I was struggling and for all the brilliant photos! Highly recommend.

We went to different tour agencies but the profesionalism and charm from the Jiwaki agency convinced us right away. They spoke pretty good english and where helpfull and funny. The tour was simply amazing. Our guide William did it all. From start to finish he made us feel safe, cooked delicious food, spoke good english, listened to our needs, took great pictures on moments we couldn’t... He knows what he is doing and could tell us a lot about the mountain and how to climb it. If you are looking for a tour to Huayna Potosi, go to Jiwaki!

I booked the 3 day tour to climb Huayna Potosi with Jiwaki. It turned out to be an AMAZING experience. It was very tough(!), but we were a great group of 8 with 4 fantastic guides. Special thanks to guides William and Jesus who made this trip unforgettable. Equipment was in perfect condition, food plenty and guides professional. I would recommend this company for 100%. Good luck to reach the summit! (Because it is very demanding, but so worth it.)

I joined a group of 4 as a solo traveller, although paid for a private guide for the summit, and Jesús, Mario and Júan looked after us so well. These guides really care about making your life as easy as possible on such a challenging climb and I would highly recommend Jiwaki to anyone looking to summit Huayna Potosi! We couldn’t have made it without them. Thank you!

Completed the 3 day Huayna Potosi using Jiwaki as a friend had recommended them and I could not fault them on anything. I had brought most of my own equipment but all the team I was with said how brilliant the equipment felt and was definitely all well maintained or new. The company uses perfectly good refuges at both base and high camp and the food provided is fantastic more than enough to always be full (and I eat a lot). The real hero of the trip was definitely my guide EULOGIO! The bloke is an absolute legend, had great chat in both Spanish and English and a top sense of humor (comes in handy when you’re pretty cold half way up a glacier). He was very big on safety always making sure everything was correct and that I was feeling ok. Even though I have a few climbs under my belt it was still good to see that he was setting a calm and steady pace and not forcing an early summit! A brilliant man who I would recommend for anyone to use, and someone I hope I can climb with again in the future. Muchas gracias Eulogio y Jiwaki para todo!

I had an excellent experience climbing Huayna Potosi with Jiwaki. From booking to payment to gear fitting, everything was handled efficiently. The gear was all in good shape, the food was good and the accommodation comfortable. Our guide, Jhonny, was professional and encouraging, determining our level of experience (low) and helping us feel safe all the way to the summit. If I had time to do more climbing in Bolivia, I would definitely book with Jiwaki!

I climbed with Jiwaki for both Huayna Potosi (3D/2N) and Pequeno Alpomayo (2D/1N) and I cannot recommend these guys enough. I never write reviews but feel very compelled to write one about Jiwaki. They were brilliant I did Huayna Potosi first, a brilliant introduction to alpine climbing and a good challenge. Juan, Evan and Mario were consummate professionals, these guys know exactly what they are doing. Providing good gear, food and great communication about what the plan is for each day. They take safety very seriously and will make sure that you are prepared and doing everything you need to be doing. Something I really appreciate on the mountain and not a given in South America. They are constantly checking in on you to makes sure that you are ok and that able to complete the next section of the climb. They work very hard to make sure you are prepared to meet the challenge, but also really enjoy it! Oh, I so enjoyed Huayna Potosi, amazing to reach 6088m and see the most spectacular sunrise and views out to Lake Titicaca, the jungle, La Paz and the surrounding mountains. It will blow your MIND! If you are acclimatised and in good shape GO! GO WITH JIWAKI! Its not as hard as everyone makes it out to be if are in shape and an absolute highlight of my 6 month trip to South America. So I got a taste of the mountain and wanted to try something a little more technical. Jiwaki recommended Pepueno Alpmayo and man was it an incredible challenge. I was the only one climbing the mountain with my amazing guide Jhonny, so that alone made it an amazing and very different experience to Huayna Potosi. Pupueno Alpamayo is a 2-day, 1-night expedition. The summit is at 5410m and takes you up a glacier to start, over carvasses and then up a challenging (for a beginner like me) and totally rewarding final ascent. These bring quite a bit more technical climbing than Huayna Potosi and a great option for those looking for a little more. You really need a good guide for this climb, with the technicality, brings more challenges and ultimately safety issues than Huayna Potosi. Jhonny was incredibly focused and obviously an incredible good and experienced climbing. I felt safe and supported throughout, Jhonny kept me prepared and helped me push through one of the most challenges of my life. It included a 50 degree 200m ice climb, some steep rock climbing and abseiling and man was it fun. The reward was huge! Thanks Jhonny! If you are thinking of doing any climbs around La Paz, you need to go with Jiwaki!! These guys are true pros and their prices are not going to break the bank.

If you want to climb Huayna Potosi, Jiwaki is the company to use. The equipment is brand new and you get everything you need as well as being able to rent extras. The guides are brilliant (my group had Jhony, William and Mario). The price is very reasonable for what you get and relative to other companies. I chose the 3D/2N option to give more time for acclimatisation, which definitely helped. A few people joined us for the climb who were doing just the 2D option and none of them made it. It is a very tough climb though and regardless of acclimatisation you will need to be physically fit to even contemplate doing this. The first day we all met up in Jiwaki's office and drove to pick up some equipment and then on to base camp for lunch. After lunch we went trekking on the nearby glacier to practice using crampons and an ice axe and then had the option to do some ice climbing. The second day we walked up to high camp in a couple of hours just after lunch. Before having an early dinner and heading to bed at 6pm. The third day you wake up at midnight and start trekking to the summit around 1am. It was tough going with steep uphills, lots of snow and some tricky obstacles to get over. You ideally reach the summit at sunrise but we got there just after and there wasn't much of a view because of the weather. It is then a fairly intense trek back to high camp before a quick lunch and carrying all your stuff back down to base camp for the trip back to La Paz (we got back around 2pm). The first couple of days you have lots of free time so bring a book or something to do. There's endless tea so you can have a chat and play cards. The trek is extremely challenging, especially with the altitude thrown in. Only 4 f our group of 10 made it to the top with everyone else having to turn back at various points. The lodges at base and high camp (especially high camp) are pretty basic with large shared dorms. They do the job but don't expect luxury. The food was decent too, but bring snacks, especially for the trek on the final day. As I mentioned, the Jiwaki guides are great. Funny but very professional and Jhony encouraged/dragged me to the top. They provide 1 guide for every 2 people so this makes it much safer for people who need to turn back as they radio each other to rearrange the groups to get people back to camp safely.

I had a wonderful time with my guide Ovidio on the 2 day Huayna Potosi climb. Ovidio was always very patient and friendly. Without him it would have been much harder to reach the top. Jiwaki is a good agency with good equipment and tasty food in the refugios. All of this for a very good price

Did the Huayna Potosi tour with Jiwaki and I recommend them to everyone! Everyone and everything at the organisation shows the professionalism and expertise. The equipment was really good and new, the guides were great, both base camp and high camp really comfortable and clean. The food they give you is good, high quality and abundant. We were 4 guys ranging from 25-30 years and none of us was hungry at any moment. Lots of tea and water also. The three day tour was great for us, the extra day acclimatization really helps (none of us felt bad at high camp or had altitude sickness on the mountain climb itself) and it's just a great experience spending these days on the mountain. We all made it to the top and that is all thanks to the great guides we had, they were really friendly, experienced and reassuring us that with the correct pace we would be able to make it. It was extremely difficult though but 100% worth it. Even if you don't make it to the summit, the views from anywhere on the mountain are amazing. Anyone thinking of attempting the summit I recommend going with Jiwaki.

I went with Franz and other guides from Jiwaki to Huayna Potosi three times in three years (with different groups from the Czech Republic) and I was always astonished by their professionalism and friendlines. They have a good tactics, encourage you to climb to the summit and most importantly - get you safely down the mountain. Equipment is up-to-date and catering excelent. I highly recommend.

I did the Huayna Potosi hike with no experience of ice climbing and was hesitant about which agency to go with. I decided to go with Jiwaki from a friends recommendation and it didn’t disappoint. Knowledgeable guide (Juan’s is a legend), good beds and good food. A very reasonable price to top it off. This is a very respectable family business.

I highly recommend Jiwaki for Huayna Potosi. My 2 brothers and I (novice mountaineers, in our late 20s/early 30s, in decent shape) did the 2 day climb. The 2 day vs. the 3 day provides less time to acclimatize and thus is an added challenge, and still we successfully summited with the help of Jiwaki. Pricing, newness of equipment and quality of guides is where Jiwaki seems to standout. Whichever company you choose, be wary of altitude sickness because the headaches and nausea can be real!! Pricing We shopped around alot for this trek, and discovered a lot of the shops in La Paz were just agents for a smaller group of trekking companies. Word on the street was that Jiwaki was the best genuine trekking company so we booked directly through them. This have us confidence of getting a good price. Equipment All the equipment was new enough to still be in excellent condition and seemed to be of good quality though not brands we recognized as Canadians (note we're not mountaineering brand experts). Guides Finally the guides we're real professionals, focused on safety, knowledgable and willing to share that knowledge. We had a group of 8 attempt the summit while we didn't all succeed, we were all well supported. Our ratio of guides to climbers was 1:2, which allowed for us to voluntarily break into groups of similar speeds based on our fitness and ability to cope with altitude. Furthermore guide pairings were based on language abilities. All guides could communicate basics in English, but non Spanish speaker climbers were paired with Jiwaki's more English proficient guides. Throughtout the climb there were numerous examples of Jiwaki guides demonstrating their knowledge of the mountain, mountaineering and safety. We all learned a lot of basic mountaineering skills even on the 2 day trek. I think you'd learn even more on the 3 day. Altitude Sickness This is real. My brothers and I are all in decent shape physically, and had spent 10 days driving around Southern Bolivia at altitude, and still had a real struggle with headaches and nausea. We still summited but all thought it was really tough. I'm not sure the 3 day would resolve this, but it might help. Also read lots about altitude sickness before the hike, practice what you learn.

I booked my tour to climb Huayna Potosi with Jiwaki, even though I couldn't find any reviews online, and have no regrets! They explained the tour very professionally and transparently and their gear is brand new. They told me that the agency was recently founded by an experienced mountaineer. The tour was awesome, the food was actually good and plenty and my guide, Juan, was very professional and nice. Don't hesitate, they are very serious and will put you in good conditions to get you to the top!

Very helpful and friendly agency ❤️🇧🇴 William and his team are amazing and help wherever they can! First i booked the trip to Huayna Potosi and also for my girlfriend the 3D/2N condorini (in the end she good a privat tour on her own with a great guide). Then I also booked Pico Austria and I had an amazing time with the group and our guide Juanca 👌🏻 perfect weather, got some snacks paid the extra 20Bob for the entrance. I did Huayna Potosi as a 3Day/2Nights tour which I would recommend to acclimatize and practice walking with crampons (1st day)👌🏻 we even ice climbed a bit which was a great experience with our guide Felix! The food (in my case 🌱)was basic but good as your digestion is slow in the altitude. You have plenty of time on the first and 2d day as in the second you hike with all your gear from the base camp 4800 to the high camp 5250m on the midday, get dinner and get some sleep (the mattresses are laid flat and could be exchanged but I guess this is based on the refugio and it’s basic quality on 5250 in bolivia). 0:30 you start your day, get some tee and head up to Huayna Potosi 🏔️🌄❤️🇧🇴 an amazing experience and our guide Felix hiked in the perfect speed! He always asked us how we are and if everything is fine. I’d recommend to wear lots of lays as it can get cold on the top 6088m, pack some high altitude medicine, pain killers, snacks, water for this trip 👌🏻 I had a great company with some other guys from another agency and we had a great time 🤩 Thanks to the whole team of Southtrek for this amazing adventure!

I could not recommend this company more for the Huayna Potosi summit. Everyone from the office team to the guides are amazing. Do the three day - the “training” day is so important to climatize and get use to the equipment. Also, and probably the most important, south trek has the highest high camp, which makes a huge difference. The day of the summit you are already at the base of the mountain while other companies stationed at the lower high camps have an additional 20min climb over icy rocks. The gear is good quality, but some is definitely old. So really double check the gear you’re given before you leave the office. (My friend’s main backpacking clasp was broken and another’s crampon broke on the way down which was very dangerous.) Bring good quality wool socks and under layers. Do not overpack - you’ll probably wear the same clothes all three days. Once at high camp, you will only have access to boiled water, so maybe bring some purification tablets. Also bring electrolytes, altitude sickness meds, and Imodium. If you are prone to stomach problems, maybe request the veggie options. This was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. While I got lucky with amazing weather and great views, that is not always the cases. Do not do this “hike” for the views. It is a not a hike. It is a physical and mental challenge. So do it for the challenge, not the views.

Very nice and local tour agency. We did the 3 days Huayna Potosi trip and all 5 of us reached the summit which is definitely also because of the experience of our guides. We had the perfect climb and arrived 5min before the sunrise at the peak, and also were the only group up there. Sooo amazing!!! Definitely very skilled and good tour guides, with lots of experience. Equipment and gear was in good condition and helped a lot to keep us warm and cosy. Would highly recommend this tour agency for any mountaineering activity around la Paz.

Amazing experience with South Treks!!! First mountain with the company was Huayna Potosi in the 3 days and Ramírez as a guide! We had such an fantastic time together and I felt really safe with him! I have a lot of mountain experience in the Alps but this time was different and Ramirez gave me all the time the feeling that he knows for 100% what he is doing! After we came back I planned with him another tour to the Pequeño Alpamayo. This mountain is more difficult and you need good experience on glaciers and in ice climbing. Same feeling with him, always safe and we had a lot of fun together but the weather was really bad...Always great and enough food. The equipment is in a good condition and everything gets checked twice before you leave to a tour. Fair prices, great tours, great guides, all in all top!!! Go with South Treks!

Great tour operator! First we did the El Choro track. It is recommended to do it in 3 days, but for the fanatics 2 is also possible. Charlie and Hermesiño were the two guides who helped the 4 of us on this beautiful track through the Yungas. Because of them we even saw monkeys. In addition, we did the Huayna Potosi. You can do it in 2 or 3 days but we recommend 3 days in order to get used to the altitude. The first days we did ice climbing and some rest on 4900m height. The second day we went to high camp on 5300m and the last day we reached the peak! Gonzalo was our amazing guide. He was a really experienced guide who prepared us the perfect way. Also during the last day he made sure we felt allright and we had the perfect speed to get to the top. In our group also the other guides were really helpful and everybody made it to the top. I participated in the Huayna Potosi tour for 2 nights and 3 days for 850 boli. I also gave the entrance fee of 50 Boris and a small tip to the guide. The woman at the reception desk was thorough in her explanations, and she was also helpful when choosing rental items for the day. The deciding factor for the agency was the location of the high camp. Southtrek has a high camp higher up than the popular Jiwaki, so you can save time and energy when attacking the summit. It must have been a struggle to get there, especially with the rented plastic boots. I rented everything and had no problems. Shoes are plastic boots and are quite hard, so it is recommended to bring your own shoes. Thanks to our guide, we were able to reach the summit safely. Climbing the mountain itself is by no means easy, so you shouldn't go there just as a tourist while visiting Uyuni. But it was a great experience. gracias!

Participated in a 3-day Huayna Potosi tour for 850 Boris. Honestly, I didn't expect this much support at this price. Not only will they help you climb the mountain, but if you give them your cell phone they will take photos for you and will also be very attentive to your height. Thanks to you, I was able to enjoy the climb. At high camp, he found a USB cable that I had forgotten on the bed and brought it to me. Guides don't usually check things like that lol. Huayna Potosi - our guide limber was just super good, takes very good care of his team and is really keen to get to the summit himself, which gave us the motivation we needed. My partner and I did the 3 day (2 night) Huayna Potosi climb with South Treks as they were recommended to us by a friend who had also climbed with them. This was an amazing experience and excellent value for money (we booked in the office for 850 each). The guides Umberto, Felix and Louis were great. Umberto was our guide for the summit climb (it is 2 people roped to 1 guide) and he was so patient and kind to us. Our whole group made it to the summit in time for sunrise which was spectacular! The food was excellent on this tour - big portions and healthy/fresh. Some of the best and most plentiful food we have had on an organised hike in South America. This is a tough hike but as long as you have a good base level of fitness and perseverance it is manageable. Beforehand I was nervous about the 'technical' elements but nothing was too hard and you only do the ice climbing on day 1 for fun and pictures. During the night climb there are a few crevices but they are not too big. Doing the 3 day instead of 2 definitely gives you the best shot at acclimatising to the altitude which can make the summit climb a little easier. Just note that at altitude it is difficult to sleep so you will likely not get much rest over the 3 days. FYI - The guides do not speak much English so you will need to know some basic Spanish to be able to communicate effectively with them. Highly recommend this experience with South Treks!

William was very friendly, answered ALL our questions, gave us a lot of good advice. Roberto was our guide for Austria Peak. Excellent guide! He didn't speak much english, but we didn't mind, we want to learn spanish. In early April, I arrived in La Paz with my boyfriend with the aim of climbing the Huayna Potosi (6088m!). Hiking we do a lot, but climbing experience we did not have before. We visited several tour operators in la Paz (their offices are basically all in the same street) but most of them just wanted to sell us the tour. SouthTreks was the only one who were super helpful, asked us about experience, and in the end fully customised a plan of acclimatisation for the 2 of us (for the high altitude, I strongly recommend doing this!) And organised 'training' hikes for us to make our dream come true! We did the following excursions with them: 1-day Charquini, 2-day trek Condoriri/Pico Austria, 1-day Chacaltaya (tailor-made so we could practice our climbing more, instead of just hiking) and cherry on the cake 3-day trek to Huayna Potosi! The office of South Treks in Sagarnaga La Paz is very helpful, also quickly accessible via Whatsapp. Guides Valerio and Ramiro Ramirez were very attentive to our needs during the excursions, making our experience unforgettable. Make sure to ask for one of them to accompany you during your tour. Valerio was always uplifting and in a very good mood, and did not just teach us about mountains but also about the various cultures and history of Bolivia. Ramiro was our rock in the Huayna Potosi trek. He made sure we felt comfortable in the refugos, helped us every day with putting on all the equipment, and made us feel very safe during the difficult parts of the climb. We could not be more thankful to these 2 amazing guides, and to the whole team as well! Big plus; everyone we met at SouthTreks speaks English ;)

At the beginning of April 2024 I did the 3-day, 2-night tour to the summit of Huayna Potosi. First you try on the equipment in an agency camp. I only had a sweater and sweatpants as warm clothing. For me, the equipment was sufficient in terms of temperature, as the weather was perfect on the day of the climb. However, depending on the weather and the time of year, it is advisable to bring several socks (even thick ones), your own thermal underwear, thinner wind jackets, gloves or similar if necessary. On the first day you practice using crampons and ice axes, on the second day you hike to the high camp at 5,200 m above sea level. At around midnight on day 3 you get up and start the ascent to the summit. There is a passage where you half climb and need the ice axe and the last part is relatively steep. The biggest challenge is the altitude and therefore breathing. The guides from South Trek looked after me very well the whole time. You are particularly well supported on the ascent and motivated when needed. Despite being very cautious about the climb, I felt safe the whole time. No special prior knowledge of the mountain is necessary. However, due to the altitude, sufficient acclimatization is necessary. To do this, research the term altitude sickness and prevent it. I also recommend painkillers in case of emergency. I recommend the tour with Southtrek to everyone. A special thank you to my private guide, Felix, with whom I was the first to reach the summit of the day!!!

This company offers the best tour if you are wanting to climb Huayna Potosi. I highly recommend doing the 3 day tour over the 2 day tour as it allows better acclimatisation to the altitude and more rest before a significant hike. Another reason to choose South Treks is that they have access to the closest high camp to the glacier meaning that they are beat placed compared to other companies! Our Guides, Javier and Luis were amazing and both spoke / understood a little English which was helpful. They have climbed this mountain over 1000 times so are extremely a knowledgeable and make sure that you have a enjoyable and safe trip. The food we were given was filling and tasty, couldn’t have asked for more. The summit attempt itself is tough, 6000m altitude is no joke, not everyone will make it! The equipment provided is well used but functional and safe. Overall the best company to go for!

Price-quality wise this agency is really good and they offer good food, a real recommendation

I spoke with William on the phone before my arrive to La Paz, he was patient and explained everything to me. When I arrived, he welcomed me like a member of his family and we spoke about my plans to climb 4 summits of 6000m. We started with 1 day of ice climbing in Huayna Potosi with Javier the guide. Javier was amazingly professional and patient and took the time to explain the technical part. I continued to climb with Javier illimani and he stopped me before I hit the ground when I fell face first. After illimani we continued to climb the French route in Huayana Potosi and after that we went to climb Pomerape. We also tried to climb Sajama and Illampu but the conditions were very bad so we had to go back. Javier is an amazing guide and extremely professional I highly recommend him and The agency of William! They make you feel like family and they will always take care of you!!

I booked my 2-day Huayna Potosi climb at the last minute so this was the only company I could find to guide me. I was a little unnerved because the price was less than half of what most companies were charging, but I was pleased that the gear was all at a high quality, they provided everything and more than I needed, and the guide Juan was extremely experienced. Only dropped a mark because I wasn't completely informed about what was going on and hotel pickup wasn't included as promised. Otherwise I had an amazing experience on Potosi and would recommend it to any mountain-lovers with some hiking and altitude experience.

Very nice 2D experience Cerro Huayna Potosi. Before leaving, check the equipment you receive at the agency. My jacket had a broken zipper, my pants kept opening during the climb and my ice ax didn't have a safety cord.

We decided on a 2-day tour of Huayna Potosi with Jiwaki because of the low price and the good reviews and were very satisfied with the organization, accommodation (basic shared room), condition of the equipment (e.g. Petzl crampons and helmet), food and the tour itself. However, we would like to point out at this point that although the guides are trained mountain guides, they do not have internationally recognized certificates (in our experience, a UIAGM guide can be requested for $100 a day, but contrary to our hopes, this did not add any additional benefit in terms of safety and the climb) and often give the impression that the climb is not dangerous. There is hardly any mention of acute altitude sickness here (although participants often suffer from serious altitude sickness), and no questions are asked about preparation, acclimatization or previous experience. Of course, Huayna Potosi is one of the easier 6000m peaks, but it is still a high-altitude tour that requires at least basic experience on the glacier, as some passages have to be climbed or are very narrow and steep. Good physical fitness and sufficient acclimatization (at least a week above 3500-4000m) are also definitely necessary. Unfortunately, during the ascent, our guides hardly took the needs and different levels of the participants into account and did not choose the ascent tactics particularly wisely (e.g. rest areas, paying attention to other groups and the narrow passages). In our opinion (we already have experience of high-altitude tours and are trained high-altitude physicians), the ascent is often taken too lightly. Beginners to high-altitude tours in particular should weigh up the risks carefully and, if necessary, start with easier tours or gain experience with ice training over several days.

I had debated whether to leave this review because I genuinely like William, the owner of south treks. However, I do think that my attempt to summit Huayna Potosi was severely hampered by the equipment provided so I decided to leave this review. Multiple parts of the equipment weren’t good such the pants zipper not closing and the coat zipper coming right off. However, those ultimately would have been fine. The main problem were the rigid mountaineering boots which were basically ski boots and thus incredibly hard to climb up in (go to youtube and type in Huayna Potosi and watch one of the videos to see what the boots are supposed to look like. I was given what looked and felt like ski boots from the 90s). To be fair, another person in my group had the same rigid mountaineering boots and was able to summit the mountain so it’s not like the bad mountaineering boots were enough to stop an excellent athlete from reaching the top. However, that person made it clear he summited in spite of the equipment and not because of it and he felt severely hampered also. I decided this review is valid after I compared my mountaineering boots supplied by south treks and the my guide’s mountaineering boots. His were sleek and flexible and vastly superior to what was supplied to me. This told me that the company knows the boots they gave me were not up to par. They just gave it anyway because they aren’t willing to invest in good equipment. Now it’s true that they are on the cheaper end compared to other companies. However, it’s also true I gave them more than $100 for the opportunity to summit the mountain and their mountaineering shoes made it impossible for me. To be fair though, the altitude did make me tired so it’s very possible I would have come up short anyway. Still, that doesn’t change the fact that the equipment sucked. The ski boots I was given should absolutely not be given to anyone. Given the amount I and all the other customers paid, we deserve quality mountaineering boots such as the ones the guide had. Another complaint, and this really isn’t just about south treks since I think every outfit does this, is that you have to carry up all your gear (helmet, pick axe, crampons, sleeping bag, mountaineering shoes) from the first base camp to the second one. The reason this is illogical is that the second base camp is a house with beds, pillows and blankets. So why are you carrying up a sleeping bag? Even if it’s necessary, can’t they just keep it in the second base camp? Judging by the smell, they obviously aren’t cleaning it between uses. There’s also no reason not to keep the pick axe, helmet, harness and crampons in the second base camp instead of having you carry it up. Those four items were never individualized to the person (unlike the boots, coat and pants which were checked to make sure they fit you). Also, the guides keep all their equipment in the second base camp, so why not have some of the equipment there for the hikers also? They definitely have the room for it. The only reason I can think of is that on the hike from the first basecamp to the second, guides, who again are carrying a much lighter backpack since their gear is already at the second base camp, offer to carry people’s bags for 100-150 bolivianos. So possible, maybe even likely, they make hikers carry all their gear so that if they struggle the guides can make more money carrying it for them. This is pretty lame. Guides should be guides and not offer to be porters for more money. By the way, Gonzalo, the guide supplied by south treks, was fine. He did try to make more money by offering to carry bags and he spoke no English but he was a strong, tough guy who made sure we were safe so no complaints there. Furthermore, the food wasn’t good (lunch was just bland chicken with tasteless white rice) but it’s not like I was there for the food so that’s not a big deal. Really, it’s just about the equipment. Overall, given my experience, I regretted attempting this hike with south treks which is why I’m leaving a negative review. I should have spent an extra $50 and hired a company that would supply me with quality equipment. Then I would have had a chance to summit the mountain. With South Trek’s mountaineering boots, I had zero chance.

I am amazed to see so many positive comments, this agency provided equipment in a deplorable state, especially in comparison with the other agencies that we encountered during the climb who have brand new equipment, I insisted from the various guides about the fact that my shoes had completely exploded and were taking on water but they told me it was my imagination, the zipper on my jacket broke just at the start of the climb, I finally made it up at the frozen summit and with the anxiety of losing my toes, when I went back down to the 1st refuge by taking off my shoes my socks were soaked with water I no longer felt my toes but fortunately no after-effects. In short, if you want to climb the Huayna Potosi in good conditions, take another agency
