Grupo Alpamayo Tours

Best location, best price, and excellent service at Grupo Alpamayo Peru! Grupo Alpamayo Peru: This very center of Huaraz - very close to the central market of Huaraz - close to the plaza de armas and the buses - of all needs Everything is very well thought out at the hotel: the common parts are very nice - the Showers are hot - you can leave your things in safety or order the deposit - The beds are very comfortable. The hotel is very clean All the hotel staff are very friendly, professional and ready to help - The staff of workers always has good advice for hiking in the Huaraz region and it is a lot of fun. The excursions of the agency "Peru Expeditions Tours" they have very professional guides. I stayed a week at Hotel Alpamayo, the place where I felt the best after two months of traveling in Peru. And the region is wonderful, much to do. When I was in the city of Huaraz I was with a group of 12pax, 14pax and 20pax always, during my visit I made the following circuits; Santa Cruz trek, Alpamayo trek and climbing and Huayhuash trek, also travel cooperation in the region of Cusco with Eric Albino, visit to the Ausangate trek, Salkantay trek, Choququirao trek, Inca Trail ancient path to Machu Picchu. I recommend this Hotel for all travelers who like to have a good time in the city of Huaraz.
I did the 5 day Ausangate Trek with Vidal Expeditions and cannot recommend the company enough! The guides (Chino, Vinerson and Julián) were very professional and knowledgeable, attending to every question we had and making sure our experience was entirely positive. The organisation both before and during the trek was excellent and we were fortunate to receive the upmost care at all times. An experience of a lifetime and would recommend Vidal Expeditions for any trekking/climbing/mountain biking you want to experience around Cusco!
We climbed Ausangate in 4 days with VE. The entire itinerary was respected and the logistics were exceptional. Our mountain guide Urbano is a wealth of knowledge and extremely experienced in the mountains. The snow climb on the 200m wall was difficult but with Urbano's experience supporting us we managed to overcome it. It was also incredible to eat such good food prepared by the chef Julio in such an inhospitable place with few resources. Highly recommended!!!
An excellent trip to snowy Qampa in Ausangate! We had the opportunity to explore and climb this great snow-capped mountain in the city of Cusco, our guide Carlos gave us all the necessary information to reach the summit. We had the best equipment, good food, and a good work team.

We went for the Ausangate four day trek with our guide Edwar, chef Charlie and horseman Julino. The trek has breathtaking scenarios of the mountains, icy peaks, tumbling glaciers, turquoise lakes and green marshy valleys. Edwar is the most knowledgeable and helpful tour guide that I have met. As someone who has almost zero experience in high altitude hiking, he helped us navigate and adapt to the weather and the territories. He taught us when to speed up and speed down when climbing uphills and downhills. He also has rich knowledge about local customs, animals and cultures and we got a thorough understanding of the local culture through his insightful introductions. Charlie, our cook, always remains outgoing and delighted and cooked great food: very delicious and we have at least four different entrees every single meal. We also have snacks and teatime biscuits prepared by Charlie along the way. The horseman Julino helped set up our tents and camping sites and carries our heavy luggages along the way to ease our burden. For future travelers, I would advise that this is a great route to combine Ausangate and the rainbow mountain. However, travelers should be prepared for altitude sickness (bring appropriate medication), and do more aerobic trainings in advance as climbing uphills in highlands can be very demanding. Also, remember to bring enough clothes to stay warm during the cold nights on the trek (at least four layers, and a rain jacket and a puffer jacket would be advised).

My friends and I did this trek in late December 2021 and would highly recommend it. It was hard to find any company to take us on a mountain hike in Peru during the wet season but AB Expeditions was up for the challenge and made it a great experience! The path we took around Ausangate to Rainbow Mountain was breathtakingly beautiful. The vastness and variety of the landscapes was like nothing I’ve seen before. The colors of the earth and terrain changed almost every day. The pictures online don't do it justice and it is something you really have to experience for yourself. The best part was that there were no tourists on the path so we were able to enjoy nature to ourselves. We saw a great amount of alpacas and vicunas grazing and were even blessed by an Andean condor flying overhead. The majority of the trek was between 4500 and 5000 meters which might be challenging without proper acclimatization. My favorite part of the trek was Puchacocha campsite. It is at the southern base of Ausangate and in front of 2 glacier lakes. We liked it so much, we decided to stay 2 nights there and day hike around the area. By the way, AB's campsites are amazing. They are in scenic locations and they actually have shelters and cabins which came in handy. It rained almost every night on our trip and we appreciated the extra cover over our tents at night. AB did a great job. Our guide Mijail was an experienced trekker and mountain climber in addition to being a fun personality. The route was quite flexible to fit our needs, desires and also the weather. The food was surprisingly tasty. The owners, Abel and Elsa, were responsive, caring and treated you like family. They went out of their way to make sure both our trek and the rest of our stay in Cusco was enjoyable! Ausangate was one of the best treks I have done in my life. Don’t miss it!

Due to a packed schedule, we only had 4 days to get to Ausangate. While a well-done full circuit can take anywhere from 10 days or more, we still wanted to try to do part of the trek. After making inquiries of a few companies prior to traveling to Peru and not feeling completely comfortable with the requirements (all companies wanted half of the fee up front but the information wasn’t quite available), we decided to poke around Cusco and met with several different companies there. Guide operators are generally friendly, but some are more personable than others--for example, very popular companies right on any of the plazas may get a lot of walk-ins, so it doesn’t always seem like they are that interested in everyone or have time to be thorough. My husband and I believe we are friendly and conscientious (e.g. about environmental waste, responsible tourism, etc), so we are thrilled that we happened upon AB Expeditions. I had seen an AB Expeditions Instagram post of shelters up at Ausangate, so we visited the page, then did a little research on TripAdvisor for other reviews. We were impressed to see that AB has pretty much perfect reviews--and now we can say, believe the hype; they are that good. From the time we met with Abel, I felt instantly comforted--he really knows what he is doing. Ausangate is not a very popular trek, but AB really knows the different routes and possible variations, and that was apparent from our conversation. It was important to me to do this hike, especially what with the hustle and business of daily life in the U.S. I really needed some reminders of how beautiful our world is. Abel showed us the route on a map, explained each day carefully to us, provided us will all relevant information like what the company provides and what we are expected to bring, etc. Most importantly, he did not pressure us to make decisions, even though our projected departure was 2 days from the time we walked into his office. He provided us with his contact information, which I did use because I got a little sick and wasn’t sure how I would feel to commit to the trek. Suffice it to say, I got better fast, and we made the commitment to do the trek within one day, and within a matter of an hour, Abel’s colleague at AB, Carlos, started making the arrangements for us. During that time, he also asked our guide to meet with us so we wouldn’t have to return to the office that evening. We met Delia, and she was excellent from start to finish of the trip. Being Indigenous peoples, we felt very strongly about having a responsible connection to the experience, and Delia was not only from the area and knew many of the people we passed along our hike, but she is also multilingual--speaking Quechua, Spanish, and English. English was important for my husband who is learning Spanish but not yet conversational. Delia is also a very smart guide--she worked with us on pacing and clearly knows a lot about guiding people through high altitude hikes. We never felt rushed, and she knew how to balance some of the more strenuous climbs very well, and there was always excellent conversation regarding the region and our surroundings. We really liked her a lot as a person and think she’s just wonderful! One of the things I really appreciated about our trek was the interaction with everyone--Abel was amazing and personable and really reaffirmed our desire to pay our respects to this intense and beautiful place, and Delia was so respectful to all the community members and encouraged us to continue supporting the local economy--which we were more than happy to do by purchasing from the artisans. One of the major highlights for us was getting to interact with our arriero, Fernando, who also served as assistant to the cook, Eusebio. These two gentlemen were among the hardest working people we’ve ever seen. They were kind and caring, and the food was AMAZING, natural and local. This trek was a very moving experience, and I am very grateful to Abel and his team for their attention to detail and most of all, for their kindness. Abel met us at our hotel drop off as well to check in in-person and to ask us for recommendations on how the company can improve, to which I can only say, please keep doing what you are doing and let more people know about you and how awesome AB is!! Some mild suggestions for travelers (take it or leave it): Pack well for your season--I brought a rain jacket, a lightweight down jacket, a heavy fleece, a light fleece, thermal pants, a thick ch’ullo/wool cap, gloves, and a cap for the strong sunshine. There was snow, hail, and rain, and I ended up using everything I brought. Bring cash to purchase from local vendors, and we also tried to tip as well as we could--everyone works incredibly hard.

We had a great time exploring Ausangate and Rainbow Mountain with Urbano. It was four incredible days with great service from the start until the drop-off. The hike is quite challenging due to the fact that we had to climb a few times over 5,000 meters in cold weather. However, with Urbano as our guide, we were very motivated to complete the whole circuit. We were a group of three people from different nationalities, and Urbano managed to be a family. We also had two other local friends (Angel and Miguel) who came with us to organize everything we got on this trip. We were worried about the weather conditions due to January is part of it, and we're very lucky to have incredible days even with little rain in the evening. The food was awesome; our chef prepared a variety of food every day, and they also provided warm water every morning and afternoon. They set up all our camping gear every day. Urbano took stunning photos and told us great histories during these four days, took care of us every moment, and had useful information about the area.We recommend preparing very well for this trek and taking time to acclimatize well in Cusco before heading for this tour. Drink plenty of water and do some exercises, but the views are without a doubt worth it.

I had the most amazing trip with Vidal Expeditions. My guide was Urbano and he was awesome! This was my first mountain climb where I had to use crampons and an ice axe. We agreed to start with Qampa mountain / glacier (5520m) to practice using the gear (crampons and an ice axe). Urbano showed me how to use the equipment before and on the way up. Everything was clear and well managed. I felt very safe. The food during the trip was outstanding. We had 3 people and 4 horses who carried our gear, food from camp to camp, one of them a Chef. Each day we had different meals and I still can’t comprehend how they managed to do that. Unbelievable! We didn’t manage to climb Ausangate glacier due to bad weather conditions and I was aware of this possibility because April is not a good season to climb mt. Ausangate. I was open to changing the plan and so we did - we ended up hiking around Ausangate which was magical and I loved it. Overall the experience with Vidal expeditions was outstanding starting from my first email to them to the completion of the trip. Expectations were managed well since day 1 and I was aware of everything that could / might happen. Thank you so much and wish you many more great trips with many more travellers!! I definitely recommend this tour operator. I love how they look after the local communities and include them in all of their trips. Muchos Gracias!

What a great time hinking around Apu Ausangate! My friend and me went with Chino to hike around Ausangate mountain and had fab days. Chino was incredible tour guide teaching us the culture of different communities that we visit along the hike. His knowlodge about the flora and fauna on the area was amazing, very patient guide and professional, he look after us every time, specially on the difficult climb. The hike itself was challenging, however the views are stunning each corner has such amazing sceneries, lakes, valleys, glaciers, and Alpacas. We recommend to spend a few days in Cusco before to hike on this trek due the altitude. The food and whole camping equipment were excellent, we always got 3 meals which was great for the trek. Tents and matts were in good conditions and clean. The whole team were amazing they always smiling and motivating you to keep going, especially on the day 4. Honestly these people are the best, if you are planing to hike the Ausangate go with them, I am sure you will get fab days and ask for Chino for your tour guide. I definitely will recommend Vidal Expeditions even more when they are supporting the local communities around this area.

Marvelus trek in the Peruvian Andes, we hire the service of Vidal Expeditions to hike around the Ausangate mountain, it took 5 days climbing from 4,300 to 5,200 meters, honestly it is very challenging trek however it is worth! The views are unbelievable, lakes, valleys, glaciers a many snow mountains, Lamas and Alpacas everywhere makes it unreal place. Overall, the hike was the most beautiful hike we have ever done before, despite actually being physically challenging with the altitude. The view of the glacier pared with blue lagoons was just stunning. Waking up in the mountains in the morning was an unforgettable experience. Even though being vegetarian we were served yummy food with freshly prepared meals 3 times a day! Jose made sure that we were doing well at all the times and led us through the whole experience amazingly.

Excellent experience with Vidal Expeditions. As a solo traveller it was challenging to find an Ausangate trek departing at a time that worked for me. I initially reached out to Vidal Expeditions before I arrived in Peru and they did not have a trek departing at the required date. Later they reached out to say they had a trek departing which worked for me and I signed up for it. Shortly before the trek departed it was unclear if the other customer would be able to make it however Vidal Expeditions committed to going with just me. The trek itself was excellent. Chino was an amazing guide adapting the trek based on fitness levels / abilities. We did a couple of challenging extra loops as we were ahead of schedule. Given Chino’s deep mountaineering experience (he’s climbed Ausangate itself!) I always felt safe and he helped guide me through the challenging extra hikes. In the end three of the days were just with Chino and I as the other participant unfortunately was unwell, but he has great stories to tell as we were trekking and at meals so there was never a shortage of conversation. The wider team (two horseman and a chef) were also amazing. They’d always pack up after we’d left, overtake us, and have meals prepared when we arrived at lunch spots and campsites. I’d brought extra snacks with me from Cusco in case I got hungry but didn’t have to touch them because there was always more than enough food! Vidal Expeditions also take care of the little things, coming to your hotel for the pre departure briefing (unlike other companies in Cusco) and picking up the duffle bag from your hotel once you have unpacked so you don’t have to empty everything into a plastic bag on the last day. I would thoroughly recommend Vidal Expeditions and the Ausangate trek if you are in Cusco!

Qampa climb!! We had 2 incredible days hiking and climbing Qampa mountain around the Ausangate, we were only 2 people who decide to climb this mountain with 5,520m and took the service of Vidal Expeditions. They were great answering our emails and Vidal the owner provide us every details of this trip, our mountain guide was Urbano (Aka Chino) who made even better this two days trip, we hike and visited the 7 lakes on the first day, and he took incredible photos. The second day we woke up super early in order to reach the summit early morning to see the sunrise, after a few hours hike and climb we finally got the summit and got incredible views. Whole team were great for this adventure and I definitely recomment this climb for everyone who wants to experience climbing a mountain over 5,500m. and ask for Chino then you will thanks me later.

We have climbed the Qampa mountain in Ausangate, we were only two people in the excursion and had 5 workers with us, (1 tour guide, 1 chef, 2 horse drivers and 1 chef assitant) they made great job in this 2 days trip. Our guide Vinerson was a native guy from the Andes who climbed a several times this Qampa mountain, the first day was nice because we visited the seven lakes. Thar was great and happy this is included in our tour. Incredible turquoise lakes with Ausangate mountain in the background made outstanding this trip. We hike for 5 hours exploring this such a nice place and Vinerson guided us to each of these even we had chance to see more lakes around our campsite. The second day was the most challenging of this trip because we have to woke up super early in order to reach the Qampa summit for the sunrise, have a breakfast and we have begun the walk to reach the moraine and start hiking on the glacier and fanlly climb the mountain to get the summit. They organized very well this trip, good climbing gears, camping equipment, meals was great, and the team were very professional. We definitely recommend VE and Vinerson for this climb. They will make sure you get the summit and have unforgettable experience.

We were two friends who decided to try Qampa summit. After searching on the google we found Vidal Expeditions and contacted them to see if we could go for this mountain. However they were kind of friendly helping us to organize our climbing tour. It was raining season so no way to reach the summit. Our guide was Chino a very professional man from the Peruvian Andes who was really enthusiastic about the weather and he motivated us to climb the next weekend. So we decided to book a tour tour for that dates. They prepared everything for us(Food, camping gears, team and entire transportation) we just took our bags and necessary equipment and began our adventure. The first day was a long drive about 3 hours until Pacchanta village where we start our hike for 2 hours until our lunch spot located on side of the lake, after explored this nice places we kept hiking to our base camp over 4680m. Our guide Chino provide us the instructions for the climbing after a short rest he took us to see a lake with brown color located a few minutos of hike from our campsite. Day 2, woke up super early 3:00am we have wonderful breakfast made by our cook Angel who is from this surrounded areas. And about 4:00am we left our campsite and hike to Qampa mountain, 1 hour hike we arrive to the moraine where we wear our climbing gears(crampons, rope, harness, helmet, carabiners, etc.) Chino prepared us very well for this experience. Then we climb on the snow for another hour to reach the summit 5.520m where we had an extraordinary view of the sunrise we did not expect to have this awesome view because we were on the rain season. However it was the best moment of my life to see such amazing views. Chino was right when he told us if we have positive mind everything will be fine even we could have nice weather, and that was true even with the difficulty to reach the summit we were super motivated what Chino told us with and we didn’t give us, and the price was this incredible view. We had enough time to enjoy our box lunch at the summit and descend to our campsite then have lunch and hike back to Pacchanta where we enjoy the hot spring to finally return to Cusco. Honestly is was my best experience in my whole life climbing for a first time a mountain over 5.520m. And Chino made incredible job to motivated us about it. If you are thinking to try any mountain in Cusco as your first time look for Chino and Vidal Expeditions they will organize everything for sure and believe me they have the enough experience to put your life in their hands. Thank you Chino and Vidal Expeditions I am sure u will return to Cusco to climb the Apu Ausangate.

Happy to have chosen Vidal Expeditions company for this journey, overall they were absolutely excellent, more that i expected, the fully service was great since the communication with Vidal the first day we contacted him, all the informations was clear and very well explained. The pick up from the airport was a big surprise for us...Our guide Jose Antonio was efficient since he came to provide us the briefing a night before our departure, he explained very well the small details to have a great adventure along the Ausangate trek. Back the same way to have our lunch, then we hike for a few our to our next campsite. Fourth Day, we climb the last passes over 5000m it was hard but the view once reach there are so amazing, near to the Apu Ausangate, after 13km of hike we arrived to our last campsite whit a nice view of the sunset. Just returned from climbing Qampa mountain with Julian, who made a great job...We had all included in the package, it means transport, all meals (breakfast on the first day you need to pay by your own) The guide Vinersson was really friendly and knowledgeable, thanks to him we got the summit early morning to enjoy the sunrise, the coca tea at the peak help u to feel better once we got 5520 meters. It is good option to be away of the crowd and Vidal Expeditions do the right to preserve the environment with they proyect "Ausangate not trash" and very helpful for our earth. Good quality climbing gears and professional team.

I have been enjoying the adventures with Vidal Expeditions, I just finished a climbing tour around Ausangate mountain in Cusco, my guide was Chino who was very professional since beginning to the end. It was an adventure trip with my wife and me who decided to climb Qampa mountain after our trek to Machu Picchu by the Inca Trail, Our adventure began since I contacted to Vidal and they organized every details of this journey to Peru, since the pick up from the airport in Lima, transfer to our hotel, flight to Cusco, acclimatizations stay there for our Inca Trail, Vidal team was tailored perfectly to our travel desires, Our guide was Jhonatan who was exceptional along the trek, the porters, chef and whole team were incredible doing a hard job for us, I really appreciate everything from them. Machu Picchu at the end of of hike was phenomenal. The things we like most about Vidal Excpeditions is that they can organize a local experience tailored to your needs, They support the local community and people directly, they work closely with local families to create trek through areas that are not permitted by other agencies. I highly recommend them for your adventure in Cusco and also recommend them for technical climbing as well, Specially to Jhonatan and Chino both are incredible tour and climbing guides.

Had such a great days traveling to Peru, i decided to spend extra days in Cusco after to do the trek of Salkantay, i contacted to Vidal Expeditions for my last trip in Cusco. Thank you Raul for a wonderful Qampa climbing 2 days. We went to Ausangate which was a outstanding area perfect place for beginners and novices. I have climbed lots snow hills in Canada, however it was my first time climbing a mountain over 5,520 meters and Raul was very good at guiding me whilst I was on the mountain, whilst challenging my technique and my confidence over 3000 meters! I'm currently learning Spanish and Raul was super patient he spoke perfect English but he encouraged my Spanish as well. Very professional, good conversation and beautiful place (stunning view over the whole of the Andes) to climb. Qampa has grades from 4a's for beginners all the way up to 7a's. We climbed for the regular route with various grades. 100% recommended for everyone who loves to try outdoor activities.

Ausangate TREK with Cesar of Vidal Expeditions, it was one of the HARDEST TREK I have ever done in my entire life and climbing couple times over 5,000 meters :), however it was amazing and worth it once in life time!! We were already impressed with what was included in the trek prior to arrival, but the staff really went above and beyond to make it an incredible trip. Cesar was our guide (THE BEST) and couldn't have been more fun. Cook and support staff were fantastic, too. Definitely contact the office ahead of time if you have any diet restrictions, want extra stuff or less stuff.Ausangate Trek Excellent equipment, huge quantities of food that was all delicious and varied, well staffed with enough donkeys to carry and people to set pace to. Our guide himself was funny, spoke strong english for the non-spanish speakers in group and knew tonnes of history and general cultural information of area. All the staff in our group were locals of surrounding area and really enjoyed chatting with you once you made the effort to chat in Spanish. I registered here on TripAdvisor only to be able to give my very best recommendations to the great people that run Ausangate TREK. It was a true pleasure to deal with this agency all the way from booking, welcome when arriving, hotel in Cusco, trip to Machu Picchu, tour to Machu Picchu (thanks Chino for great passionate story telling!) and dinner in Aguas Calientes. We went there two families of in total 8 and we really appreciated the great service that Ausangate TREK gave us. Thanks! .

Qampa mountain climb in Ausangate was one of my best experience i have done during my life, and Vidal Expeditions made of it possible with a great climbing team! Angel was our high mountain guide who led us to the summit 5,532 meters, (first time on this kind of elevation) They were very professional providing a great service taking care about every small details during the trip since the information we got a day before our departure from our guide who explained to us the itinerary of 2 days. The first day they come early to pick up and drive towards Pacchanta village where we start our trek after a hike of 5 hours betweend gorgeous lakes and views we arrived to the base camp 4,760m. The second day we woke up early to start climbing with all our gears on, after a few hours climbing we got the summit over 5,532m at 6:18am in time for sunrise that was the highlight in this trip and Ángel made excellent job along the tour. The whole trip was very well organized meals, climbing gears, camping stuff and the team(Chef, horse driver and guide) Highly recommend!

I completed the 2D Ausangate/Rainbow Mountain/Red Valley trek and cannot recommend it enough! Our guide, Alex, was one of the best guides I’ve had while doing treks. He was attentive, patient and incredibly friendly which made our small hiking group feel comfortable and cared for. The trail climbs up moderately but factoring in the altitude, it may be considered more challenging. I would highly recommend getting well acclimated before this trip because it will give your lungs a workout! We reached Puka Pass which gives you a breathtaking view of Ausangate and the ridge. I had to walk back down the path and back up just to experience it again! The whole trail from beginning to end was beautiful, dotted with alpacas on the hillside and trails. We were asked the evening before what time we wanted to start our hike for Rainbow Mountain which was nice that there was flexibility and we can depart at a time we all agreed upon. I arrived at the viewpoint around 7am to only one other group, and if you know how popular this spot is, you know that’s rare! I would recommend getting there early to enjoy the views in a more quiet setting before the hoards of tourists show up. I do want to praise the meals we had on our trek! Denis, our fabulous chef, made the most delicious meals! I didn’t have much expectation since we were hiking, but my goodness, if I wasn’t hiking, I could have eaten it all! The portions were generous, hot and delicious. If you are a hiker and want to experience more of what this beautiful land has to offer other than just Rainbow Mountain, definitely consider Salkantay Trekking for your trip! I wish I booked more treks with them on my trip to Peru because of the ease of communication, booking and coordinating with their team (shoutout to Emily who helped me out). Even payment was easy through their portal. 100% would go with Salkantay Trekking again!
